Y84 Dreams

Smokey and the Bandit and Smokey and the Bandit II
Oh Tom, you just brought back a flood of memories! I wanted a Trans Am with the Y84 package so bad, to impress a young lady of course! Could not afford the payments at the time. If I was to get one now, I would go for the round head light, 455, in red, with the Screaming Chicken cleared over, so it would really shine. Thanks Tom, another project, I only have eight motorcycles in line ahead of it. :D:D:D:D:D

A bunch of DVDs from the library over the weekend...

Summer With Monika - An early Ingmar Bergman film about a going-nowhere teen couple (with the girl played by the luminous Harriet Andersson in her first lead role) who run off to an island for an idyllic summer. An excellent low-budget drama without any of the metaphysical pretensions of later Bergman. Interestingly, the film was recut and released in the US in 1953 as a pornographic exploitation film, since it features an unmarried couple clearly having sex, partial nudity, etc. One of the origins of the "racy Swedish film" stereotype.

Anonymous - Overwrought who-really-wrote-Shakespeare's-works drama that puts Shakespeare in Love and the Cate Blanchett Elizabeth films in a blender, but it doesn't add up to much. It looks good, but it's pretty silly, and interesting only as a curiosity.

The Fighter - I thought this was going to be more of a dysfunctional-family character study, and it was partially, but it's also an inspirational sports drama... my very least favorite film genre. (When the finale is all about winning the big fight/game/competition, I immediately lose interest.) Well acted, at least, with Christian Bale going full-on Daniel Day-Lewis and believably becoming a self-destructive, loser ex-boxer from Lowell, MA, and Amy Adams playing somewhat against type as a tough barmaid with a heart of gold.

Contagion - Steve Soderbergh's all-star disease-spreads-quickly-and-kills-millions flick is pretty damn depressing, but well done. It's so plausable that you come away thinking it's a miracle that we haven't all already dropped dead from some bizarre bat/pig/human hybrid virus infecting the whole world in a few days.

Smokey and the Bandit and Smokey and the Bandit II
I just remembered another funny incident from my younger years involving Smoky And The Bandit. We took a Black Trans Am out on a test drive, yours truly behind the wheel and the young women I was trying to impress in the passenger seat, plus my 6'2" buddy and his girl friend smashed in the back seat. Took it over 100mph on the highway, those were the days! Unfortunately the girl left me soon after. Do you think my driving had any thing to do with it?
