The Night Porter (1974)

I was hoping this would be a decent film considering it was listed on the Criterion collection, but I ended up being slightly disappointed. I wasn't offended per se, but I believe the film left very much to be desired. Additionally, I think the finale was not only lackluster, but shoulder-shruggingly deserved.

"The Better 'Ole," a 1927 service comedy based on the World War I cartoons of Bruce Bairnsfarther. The second feature to be released with a Vitaphone score and sound effects, and still quite entertaining for what it is. Sydney Chaplin is a dead ringer for the "Old Bill" of the cartoons, but you can't help but watch him and think that, like Gaylord Lloyd, Harry Keaton, Jim Ameche, Harry Goodman, and Tommie Aaron, he took sibling rivalry too far.

You know what to expect from Christopher Guest (Best in Show, This Is Spinal Tap). A little creaky, sure, a little 80s SNL short film gone feature length, a little awkward when-do-I-laugh?, a little subtle obviousness (all right, a lot of that). But this delivers the peculiar, semi-private Guest brand of laughs plus commentary. Guest, a former bluegrass musician, does his own playing, too.

Hello to all, I stayed up too late last night to watch Chinatown. loved the cars, costumes, and sets, but am not certain I would rush to see it again for a few years. Tonight went with friends to see True Grit and liked it immensely along with the original, having seen it for the first time last week. Happy New years!

as far as teen angst films go, this one was pretty darn good. no nudity and very little toilet humor. Emma Stone was brilliant. and i totally wish Malcolm McDowell could have been my high school principal.

Ruthless (1947, Eagle-Lion), with Zachary Scott, Sydney Greenstreet, Louis Hayward, Diana Lynn, Martha Vickers, and Raymond Burr (directed by Edgar G. Ulmer). Told mostly in flashbacks, it tells of Scott's character's ruthless rise to the top of the financial world. Considered by some to be a Film Noir, but I'm not so sure about that. The plot really goes nowhere, although it is interesting to see how many people Scott's character will discard to the gutter in his goal to acquire more and more. Note on Hayward: After filming the bloody assualt/battle of Tarawa, while attached to the Navy/Marine Corps as a captain, he suffered from extreme depression, which threatened his career, and did greatly contribute to his divorce from Ida Lupino. Here, though, Hayward does give a smooth, if not inspired performance as Scott's old friend/business associate. Again, not a really good film, but Eagle-Lion did go on to produce a few notable Films Noir, particularly with Anthony Mann at the directing helm.

We watched Gran Torino at friends the other night - I was pleasantly surprised. After thinkingn about why it seemed familiar, it finally hit me that it's a remake of The Shootist for all intents and purposes. Lauren Bacall and Ron Howard morph into the Asian family next door, John Wayne turns into Clint Eastwood, the bad guys become the Asian gang members.

I stated to watch the first 3 movies of a Mae West box set. Very entertaining although mae west doesnt look as good as the story pretends. It's always more or less the same plot, too. But her way to talk makes up for that.
