"The Uninvited" (Paramount, 1944)
One of the earliest "ghost" movies to treat the subject seriously, and a surprisingly well structured plot for an early horror film.

Yes, yes, yes. My vote for best ghost movie of the Golden Era. It was treated very seriously and had a wonderful story around it, outstanding acting and incredible scenery. It is a gem.

I too was disappointed by "The Go-Between," but I must respond to your question in the strongest possible terms. For a start, how about "Petulia" (1968), Richard Lester's best movie and one of the best movies of the 1960s, and "McCabe and Mrs. Miller," my favorite Altman movie. Her performances in these two movies demonstrate her range: in the former, she hides depth of feeling under displays of charm and kookiness; in the latter, she is all business, no time for sentiment.

I might also mention "Darling," "Billy Liar," and "Don't Look Now," although the last one is more remarkable for Donald Sutherland's performance.

In short, Christie is one of the most interesting film actors of her generation, incredibly beautiful and a monument of unaging intellect.

I have not seen all of those - although I think I found "Darling" a bit of a mess (but it's been a long time) and I couldn't get into "Petulia" but maybe that is me. That said, I am a huge Julie Christie fan and agree with your comments about her - both her beauty and her talent - which is why I am disappointed that she seems to have only had a few good movies. I will keep an eye out for the others you mention.

That is the one with Ray Milland, isn't it? I saw the film when in my teens and thought it was a great ghost story film!

Yes.....that's the one. It was creepy enough that my wife wouldn't go upstairs to bed afterwards by herself, and waited until I had finished my beer and was ready too.

I read that when the movie was released in the U.K. that the special effects scenes of the ghosts were deleted.

The Uninvited is a great film, that doesn't need gore to shock the audience.
Those are the films I enjoy most.
However, a bit of gore isn't bad...

Last night it was Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil. Now it's not for the faint of heart because of the accidental death scenes. In fact, it's more of a dark comedy than anything. Funny though, really funny.
Because it's getting close to Halloween, I've started my rotation of favorites.

Tonight? Blacula. A great film from 1972 with William Marshall as the lead.
With a full complement of 70's clothing, cars, and music. Also with a guest appearance by Elisha Cook Jr. :eusa_clap
Tomorrow night Scream Blacula Scream. Well the plot isn't as good, but it's got Pam Grier. A fair trade off. ;)

Now that was a great film. Hilarious!! Can't recommend it enough.

Blacula is a mighty good flick too. It certainly had the potential to be terrible, but I really enjoyed it. Maybe one of the earliest flicks to portray the vampire in a sympathetic light.

Just saw Fury, with Brad Pitt. A brutal look at WWII, but if an Oscar nomination doesn't come out of it I'll be shocked. Brad Pitt was incredible, and the entire cast was surperb.

Like McConahay (sp.) Depp and few others... he's managed to move past his "pretty boy" looks and make quite a name for himself as an actor. He's due for a statue in my opinion... overdue really.

Babydoll,

Off the top of my head (and trying to keep the two movies you noted in mind):

Casablanca

Key Largo

Gilda

Sabrina

The Philadelphia Story

Suspicion

Rebecca

Laura

It is great to be able to introduce someone to old classic movies - enjoy

Thanks for the recommendations. I found several in our public library system and placed them on hold. Will report back when we've watched them.

How are the Thin Man movies? They have several available through our library.
You will enjoy them, if you like a well written crime mystery, peppered with dry humor from Powell.
RJB is correct, the exchange between them is almost true to life for a real couple IMHO.
Also, several other movies they were in together (non-thin man movies) are similar as well, and quite enjoyable.

BD, Love Crazy and I Love You Again also star Powell and Loy.
Love Crazy is a riot, and allowed Powell to be the sophisticated cutup he's famous for. ;)

Have you seen Dallas Buyers Club and/or True Detective?
McConaughey was outstanding in both.

Saw Gone Girl today. A really well done film. Did not expect what was delivered.

I have seen both and enjoyed both. He was mesmerizing in True Detective. It was without a doubt, my favorite series/show this past year.
