What type of jacket/coat might this have been?

This picture was taken around late February/early March, 1966. Either way, in the winter of 1966. My grandad was 46 when this photo was taken. While the photo doesn't show much of the coat, you can see a bit of the style and design pattern. Am curious if it looks similar to anything you've seen? It's not a suit jacket - as you can see he's not wearing a tie.

Just because he isn't wearing a tie means you exclude a suit jacket. However, that is not a suit jacket. It looks like an overcoat. It could be waist length or longer. Cannot tell from this pic.

Could be a car coat, they were very popular in the 60's. Might also be a fashion pea coat.
