What to wear with a fedora....

RBH

Bartender
RBH, is that a silverbelly Campdraft in your avatar? I think it would go well with jeans.

You Sir are quite right!
Its a silverbelly Campdraft, and it is worn with jeans.

I always wear fedora's with jeans although through wearing fedora's I seldom wear tshirts anymore. Like most of those here it goes jeans and collared shirts. Ebay isn't the deal it once was for hats, but you can still find a deal at times. Biggest thing about going to a hat shop (besides size) is to see what kind of brim looks best on you, stingy or wider. Good luck and welcome to the board!

My usual dress is pretty casual. Jeans and T Shirt much of the time, jeans most of the time. Wondering if the "typical" Fedora hat is too dressy for jeans? I often do move to a silk shirt (Nat Nast typically) for evenings out, would the shirt, jeans and a hat work in most folk's opinion?

Any suggestions/recommendations for a good hat to start with (price range under $100, better yet if around $50 so I could get two colors, one for black or blue shirts and one for earth tones). Suggestions?

I did actually just buy my first "Fedora" style hat, but it's not really thought of as one I think. It's a Filson Tin Cloth Packer hat (oil cloth). It's more for inclement weather, and I think may go well with my goatskin A2 (current issue) flight jacket, and be okay for wearing outside in Michigan's Winter.

Well, you've got your casual fedoras, your really dressy fedoras, and a lot of territory in between. For the Open Road and Campdraft type hats, because they are more casual, they are perfect with jeans. On the other hand, one of my good Borsalinos--a gray one with fairly wide brim--looks terrible with jeans and casual clothes. It's just too dressy. And in between is a full range of vintage hats, in my case mostly Borsalinos, which I pair often up with jeans because they are in between. Some of those vintage hats can be worn as dressy or as casual. I stick to collared shirts myself with any fedora, by the way, as I think it looks better in general. And for the dressy gray hat, best with a sportcoat, though it would be fine with a dress shirt with or without a tie. So long story short, it depends on the hat, but your mirror should tell you that in a flash.

We even see some fedoras and sneakers in that picture.:D

Ya know this topic comes up now and again and my take on it is that fedoras are so foreign to those I pass by on a daily basis that it doesn't matter if I wore a fedora/kilt, fedora/jeans, or fedora/speedo. It's what the wearer is personally comfortable wearing. I'm wearing fedora/jammies right now and alot of people may think that doesn't go together.[huh] My avatar is a fella who looks pretty dang good in a fedora and bibs. There are no rules for fedoras beyond the ones we make for ourselves.

Hi

If memory serves, there is a scene in "The Sting" where Paul Newman is wearing a fedora, wife beater, wool pants and suspenders. If you can wear it with wife beaters, you can wear it with ANYTHING.

later

I think there's a lot of things that Paul Newman can pull off that I can't. If you want to keep the Jeans and fedora thing safe, keep the jeans dark.

I do it almost daily. A button down collared shirt with jeans, a pair of engineer type work boots and a fedora is a great look IMO!

I think the question should be, "Can one wear jeans with a decent fedora?" [bad]

lol just kidding, I wear a jeans/fedora combo pretty often, along with a black leather jacket of which I'm quite fond.

About the only time I wear a real t-shirt anymore is to sleep in, but I often wear a good fedora with my sleep shirt and shorts around the house.
My bride is used to it after all these years.
Outside of the house it's a straw fedora over 80 degrees and felt under ... Period
What else gets worn is up to the weather, but it all starts with the hat.

NO WAY !! A Fedora DEMANDS respect and as we ALL do here you MUST wear a three piece suit in appropriate worsted wool ( yearround of course :) ) with capped toed shoes ( Allan Edmonds makes good ones in the $300.00/ $500.00 range of course :) ) and Hermes silk ties. This is what ALL good Fedora wearers ALWAYS wear daily of course ! All these pictures you are seeing showing jeans w/a Fedora are OBVIOUSLY PhotoShopped images as NO self respecting Fedora wearer would do THAT :) ( and if you believe this, I have some smoke from Mt. St. Helens I'll sell ya :) ) This is America and we don't follow no stinkin rules here :) As the Nike add says: "Just DO IT " :)
