What to wear with a fedora....

I started a thread to see if your hats influence your clothing style or did your clothing style influence your choice of hats. I was not asking for opinions on what to wear with my fedoras. I did not mean to start a redundant thread and I'm still not sure I have.

Sorry about that Job, you are right. I moved the post to the ask a Question thread where it belonged. Thanks!

Since I have the honor of being first in line in these merged threads :) (though my original title and subject was specifically jeans with a Fedora, the general title still fits), thought I'd throw in another question that fits the more generic topic.

Sneakers with Fedoras. Casual dress is already presumed (jeans most likely), and possibly a T Shirt. The hat would obviously need to be more on the casual side (or at least "casual friendly"), ie. possibly a thin ribbon, or perhaps more of a "beater" type (less crisp lines on the bash, a bit worn or rumpled, generally an older or well worn hat).

Say either some classic Chuck Taylors from Converse, or Adidas Superstars. Maybe even some of the more modern style like Nikes, Reebocks etc.

What do you think, can many pull it off without looking ridiculous?

While the lines of good taste can be crossed unwittingly, the right type of fedora coupled with the right type of confidence then sneakers pose no problem for a casual setting.

Hey Rick, check out these shots from FedoraFest II.
The first one from left to right is Art Fawcett, me and Harp Player Gene and Nikki. Thats Mr Paladin in back.
the 2nd is in front of Winchester Felt Factory.
I think these show what can be worn and look nice.

Thanks RBH, like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. That's 2000 worth of great examples of the gamut of casual dress, and obviously sneakers (and jeans like in my original inquiry) are fine.

Wow, just checked my first post in this thread. Just under 6 months ago. Seems I was thinking maybe two hats. Heheh... currently, 5 Stetsons (4 vintage plus the Nostalgia), 3 PB Panamas, 2 Dobbs, a stingy Bond Fifteen and one Akubra (with another on order and probably another to come after that). Maybe I was thinking 2 per month? :D

ETA: Forgot the Trimble. And the Mallory Ten. Sheesh.

2nd ETA: Oops... Forgot the Stetson Standard Quality too.... :D I've been away from most of the collection for nearly 4 months. Make that 6 Stetsons, and I'll probably get the one that was born out of Fedora fest also (occasionally, I wish the brim on my Camp Draft was just a bit narrower, and this sounds like it'll fit the bill nicely).

And to be fair, one of the Stetsons is nearly junk, a stingy that I'll probably never wear, it was bought in a lot of "junk" hats on eBay, the rest Women's, that I'd hoped would be a diamond in the rough. Only paid around $12 for the lot.

As Rick has listed above, it is easy to get caught up in collecting fedoras.

What you may find is that having a selection of fedoras in different styles and colors allows you to pick a hat to go with what you are wearing as opposed to picking what to wear to go with your fedora.

Well, I may be the wrong person to ask but I am always wearing a tie when I wear a hat. Typically I wear a black or grey suit with my fedora hats. I personally dislike the "fedora and jeans" look only because I don't like jeans.

I think that there is a fedora to go with almost any style of dress. In the summer I'll wear a panama with shorts and T shirt or jeans and collared shirt. For me personally, I don't fell comfortable with any type fedora with my highland attire. I know that there are persons that wear panama hats with their kilts, but that doesn't work for me.

I have a small question, to which I suspect that the answers will vary from person to person based on opinion but..

I saw this lovely Milan Braid by Optimo Hats; the color is "Rootbeer" and is a gorgeous shade of brown.. Now, I have quite a few black shirts, and black pants; I know that rule of thumb is to avoid wearing a black shirt with brown pants, and vice versa, or black pants with brown shoes, and vice versa.

What about wearing a mostly black outfit, with a brown hat?

My current straw hat which I wear with black shirts is a "natural" color, so there isn't clashing.

Thoughts?

Rules are there to be challenged (Exceptio probat regulam) to test whether they are universal or accept exceptions.
Singers were told never to dress in black because they would not be seen. Piaf and Cash made it work pretty well

The only way you'll know is by trying it out. Ideally get someone to take a picture, and look at it (rather than check yourself in the mirror), because that is how people will see you. If you like what you see, go for it. If you're unsure, post the photo here and ask. If you don't like it... Well, you'll know what to do ;)

I'm placing the order by phone, so sadly I won't get to try it out until it's been paid for in full.
