I have naturally curly hair, but when I grow it out I like the curls to straighten enough for a James Dean-like look. I have had good luck with Crew pomade. Unlike Tres Flores or other traditional pomades with which I have experience, Crew washes out with shampoo and hot water. It doesn't have that vaseliney stuff in it, so it doesn't stay in your hair or give you that unpleasant "the pores in my scalp are clogged with goo" feeling. If you want curly hair, that's another story, but if you want it straighter, you can try a pomade of that ilk. The other thing that worked -- and this may be more than you want to consider -- was bleaching my hair. This killed the curl dead (until the roots grew out curly). If you don't want blonde hair, you could conceivably dye it brown or black after bleaching it. This will restore some of the body and thus some of the curl, but your hair will still hang pretty flat. Don't take that advice if you are fond of some curl. It's only for extreme cases. At the moment I keep it extremely short, less than a quarter inch long. Thus, no curl. The disadvantage to this is that if you have kept it short for several years, you find that you don't want to grow it longer because when you do, your head feels encumbered and hot! So no more James Dean look for me.

well the cap that i have now is basically made of pantyhose-like material, so I guess it's doing the trick. I do like how it's coming out though...

I'm trying to let it grow a little longer on top. I tried some Nu Nile (by Murray's) today instead of the classic murray's. It seems to make it shinier, but it doesn't have as much hold. Would it work to mix the two?

My most sincere apologies! I have nothing against a giant ghetto afro, It's just not the style i'm after! I did not, nor do I ever mean to offend anyone on these boards or anywhere for that matter. If that's the do you like, I've got nothing against it! I was simply referring to what I expected to see come up from under that cap (not meaning it in a derrogatory way at all) upon removing it. Once again, I really do apologize for any offense caused, it was purely unintentional!

I think one of the learning experiences that each person has to go through is learning what their hair will do, and what it will not do. Once you learn the range of things it will do, work with them and don't try to go outside that envelope.

If you have straight hair, wear it so that it looks smooth and elegant. If you have wavy hair, use its body in styles that work for you. If you have really curly hair, don't fight it - just let it curl and tame it just enough to be useful.

This philosophy doesn't work for everyone, but it has worked for me, and I've repeated it to my daughters more than once. At ages 18 and 19, they've pretty well come to grips with what works and what doesn't for them.

Well, i've just been going SB&S for the last three hair cuts and letting the top grow loooong I should have some pics within a couple of days. I'm out of town this weekend so it'll be a while. Here's how i've been styling it as of late: I'll rub a bunch of Murray's in it while it's still wet from the shower,

then i'll comb it with an Ace Comb (the one with the fine teeth)

until it looks the way I want it. T

hen I'll brush it with a boar bristle brush to get it to really lay down and shine up . After a few minutes of air drying, i'll brush it down a few times to kill the frizz, then I'll leave it alone. It ends up looking something like this:

These are my latest hair results:

I am currently combing it right with the grain of the hair (down and to the right). As you folks can see it's developing a bit of a "finger weave" on it's own which I'm not crazy about. lol lol lol

I am going to try to comb it back and to the right for a couple of days to see what happens...if you folks have any ideas or suggestions please let me know!!!
