Normal depression is normal (lol)

/end being psychological and annoying lol

No, don't stop. It fits the subject of our discussion.

If you aren't depressed nowadays, you aren't paying attention.

Bravo!
Well said.
(there's so little things to make us happy.. but we are still fighting)

:focus:
When I feel like not doing anything, it's mostly represented in a form of "Why bother".. than I just do this:
1. KM player. (any dvd player, or program that runs films will do)
2. Insert the film with most magnificent and sharp dressed ladies (and gents :eyebrows: )
3. Press play

..and I'm as good as new.

It works. Every time.
When I finish watching, I go frenzy "Get me the mirror NOW.. I just MUST get my eyebrows done.. Oh, and MY lips are DYING for a bit of color"

Go ahead. Try it. :thumb:

That trick with playing a movie usually helps me, too.

But I'm getting more and more depressed about my hair. I had the feeling I finally managed to get an okay look, but now it's worse than ever. I don't know if the reason is
- my new place having hard water
- my new place having air humidity
- the season with high air humidity
- the growing of my hair (having a cut that's only distantly related to a middy)
- a mixture of all of the above
but whatever I do to my hair, it looks awful. My old pin curl routine gives bad results and I don't know what's wrong.

I'm already trying to work on the water problem, but I can't do anything about the humidity problem. Since I still have no hairdresser who is capable of cutting a middy or femme fatale, I'm not so eager about having my hair cut at the moment.

Can you ladies please help me get some motivation to hang on?
*sigh*

I'm in a real slump lately.

If it wasn't for laying my clothes out everyday, I'm pretty sure I'd be wearing whatever was the most soft flannel thing I could find in my closet. Like wahine, I could use some motivation. I'm planning on a short trip to lift my spirits, but other than that, any ideas?

As a psychologist, it isn't clinical depression unless it lasts for at least 5 months. Normal depression is normal (lol) We ALL get into unmotivated funks, especially if our routines have been disrupted and we need to go back to them. Being depressed is a normal human emotion. It's CLINICAL DEPRESSION (5 months or longer) that is a problem.

/end being psychological and annoying lol

Not annoying at all - you never know who you may be helping by talking about it (see below)...

:D The best spin on depression I've ever heard!

I've been "down" and in denial about it for what is no longer months but is actually years now and am trying to get up the energy and will to do something about it...funnily enough I do the beauty routine every time I go out; I won't leave the house unless I'm as immaculate as I can be - it's like being on autopilot almost - but it will happen that I will actually get all dolled up and I just won't feel right and will just, after all that effort, not go out! And make up some lame excuse for it.

Laying out/planning the next day's outfit really helps me a lot too. In the morning I'm rushed and tired and moody.. if I don't plan ahead I end up in boring jeans and sneakers.

I make up every day just for myself. I don't expect others to admire me. A little make-up can make me more confident and happy every day.

This is going to sound silly but I am unlucky enough to be able to look perfectly good without make-up.
Yes, that's unlucky. It means I can not be bothered. If you need mascara to have eyes, you know when you look in the mirror that you need to take that time out.... I can look in a mirror and think "can't be bothered, it'll do!"

What I think will have to start motivating me - I do look and feel more groomed with make-up, which is important when you have a good job AND a toddler - is a kick in the behind... repeat as required.

Oh Sheeplady! I wish you would come over an organize my 5 closets of clothes (vintage and contemporary) I rewear way too many things because I am rushing out the door and have no time to think on the outfit. I could easily go 3 months and not wear the same thing twice when the weather is warm.

This is probably going to sound bad to some of you, but I set out my clothes months in advance. I wear "house clothes" around the house (I do a lot of physical labor and I regularly rip things, so these are old clothes).

I use a calendar and count the weeks and lay out my clothes for the days I will be leaving the house for work. I use a rack set out in the spare room, and line up my clothes according to warmth and day of the week. (I dress down on Fridays, typically a sweater and a skirt). I can do this for about three months at a time. (I work at home at least one day a week, so I typically only do it for three-four days a week). I literally wear every piece of clothing I have that fits the seasons because I have to. If I need to repeat an item, I write it down on a card and stick it so it shows above the rack where it goes (so I know to laundry it or to replace it on the rack after wearing). I often repeat wearing skirts and blazers.

I find this much more motivating (why would I want to dress down and have to pick something out when I have an outfit planned?) and less time consuming than picking it out on a weekly basis. I also find I don't have things that I never wear, even though I like them, which was a problem for me before.

If we lived close to each other, I totally would come over. I love to organize things and go through people's closets and get inspired by their outfits. My in-laws live in Seattle, so if I am ever out there again... we could meet up and have closet organization time. lol I've love to see your collection. :)

So.. if you read the Comments you Get thread you'll know that I had a fabulous comment by a four year old little girl a few days ago. Since then I've received my Retro Makeup book, and treated myself today as a me day. With minimal interruption from the Monkey, I've shaped my eyebrows, colored my hair, and sugared my legs. Now I feel ready to face the world. I think part of what might help with the motivation (at least in my case) is the ability to not have to feel like getting ready is work. By being prepped ahead of time, it makes the getting ready that much easier. I think I'll start laying everything out the night before and see how that helps with the getting ready part of my day.

Ladies, I don't mean to intrude, but I've noticed this topic a few times in the new posts, and wanted to share something. Yesterday, my wife called me from the grocery store to check on the shade number for my mother-in-law's makeup. I immediately thought of this thread and wanted to share something with you.

My MIL lives with us, her husband passed last year, she is 88 years old, weighs 86 lbs and has to use a walker to get around. Yet, EVERY morning, she gets up, brushes her hair, and does her makeup. For those you seeking motivation, maybe this will stir you to action. Again, forgive my intrusion.

Sincerely, Scooter

Bumping this thread because it's relavent to me right now.

I've gotten back in a rut. However, with my new medication making me more energetic, I've got the bug to get myself back in the swing of things. I'm still stuck in the "jeans and sneakers" job, which is bothersome, but I think I've just accepted the fact that until I get a different job I'm just going to have to deal with it. Something that I've started doing is wearing my saddle shoes instead of my tennis shoes, and making sure that my makeup is done everyday. The act of making the concious effort to make myself look better goes a long way in making me feel more motivated. I'm even touching up my roots this weekend, and PROBABLY cutting my middy again. I think the little things have given way to motivation for bigger things. So, I suppose my suggestion to all those that are having trouble with motivation is to start small. It takes just a few seconds to swipe on some red lipstick and it makes a tremendous difference in the way I feel compared to the days I wear no lipstick or even neutral colors.

Good luck to all those struggling to find their motivation.

Wise words Lenore, I completely agree. I've been reading over this thread and I think it's a really important one.

If there is something you can do to make your experience of your day better it’s a good idea to do it. It’ll set you up to better deal with a bad day and to better appreciate a good one. Personally, I find the time I put aside to spend choosing my clothes, doing my hair and putting my makeup on feels just as important as when I exercise, work, study etc. I plan to live a long time and this is the body I have to live it in so through every stage of life I’m going to dress it and paint in ways that make me happiest and that I think look best. Why not?

Totally. I cut my middy on Sunday, and set my hair on Tuesday. I can tell you that from Wednesday to now, I've felt so fantastic about myself. It makes me wonder why there are times that I "don't feel like" putting forth the effort. I just end up not feeling good about myself, then I continue to not feel like doing anything. It's a vicious cycle. I just need to make myself do it, and then the results bring confidence and continued energy, and thusly, this cycle starts. A good cycle in which, you take care of yourself, and yourself ends up taking care of you. Maybe I'm just rambling and not making any sense....

My number one motivator is how I feel all dolled up, because I feel amazing! I may take a day or two off from my routine (when I know I'll just be lounging or studying) but I'll always hate feeling drab and can't wait to get back into the vintage swing of things. :)

Some days the motivation is to try something new and fun, or be creative. It's nice to look well put together, it's tidy, and I like that. But on days when I feel rather crappy and these things are not enough it also helps that my hair just insn't in my opinion wearable outside the house without at least some curl in it. Another good idea is to have a simple option, or a fast way to do something, that still gives reasonable results. For me it can be to use sponge rollers instead of pin curls, it's faster for me to do. Or it can be to roll up hair that has been curled earlier in the day for tomorrow, so it requires less work (the ends in particular are easy to handle in this situation), it's easy to roll, and I might just spray over it with a little bit of lottaboddy after I've set it, since it has much of the curl already.
