I too am having a difficult time with motivation (as I right this at 7am and still in my robe lol). With two young children and lots of housework I can be hard to find the motivation to put on makeup when I know I'm just going to be around the house all day. At the same time I have noticed that when I get my hair done and put on makeup I do feel better overall. It can be so difficult.

I am trying to get more motivated. I have no problems getting dressed, but my wardrobe is sorely lacking in vintage style. I am striving to do something similar to MissNathalieVintage and have pieces in my wardrobe that all go together that I can just grab and put on instead of the jeans and blouse I usually wear.

I know I look and feel better when I have make up on, so I've been trying harder in that department too. It's on my New Year's Goal List.

SheepLady-*big hugs* to you. I can not fathom what you are going through. I do, however, struggle with my weight, so I can sympathize there.

Here's to a better, more motivated 2014!

I typically invest a fair chunk of time and care into my appearance, but that hasn't been the case these past two months. Stress from family and relationship problems and final exams and essays really brought me down - my daily uniform went from dresses and pin curls to black leggings, baggy shirts and messy buns. I'm an hourglass shape so the clothes do absolutely nothing for me, and the bare minimum makeup is only passable. I felt miserable and it was reflected in my dishevelled appearance.

Things have actually taken a turn for the better since the holidays started, though! I've been trying to set my hair when I can, and on the nights when it's not possible, I got a darling set of hot rollers for Christmas that'll do the trick. I also treated myself to some fun new beauty supplies as encouragement to put on a proper face before I go anywhere in public.

While I enjoy the compliments I get when I go all out, my main motivation is definitely self confidence. I never feel better or more sure of myself and my looks as when I dress and style my hair vintage. It's the best confidence booster I've ever had! One of my resolutions for 2014 is to try to stay motivated and put in the effort every day, even if I have those days when I don't think I'm worth it.

I joined this forum just so I could answer this question. It's something I think about a lot ever since one day I gave up hair, makeup, and any kind of fashion. I went from having an everyday schedule where I would get ready to being a stay at home wife where I just couldn't be bothered anymore. It's been about two years since I've slowly stopped taking care of myself, and I'm just now starting to again.

It was one year ago that I really fell in love with the 1950's look. Ever since then I know what I want to look like, it's just trying to figure out how to do that without spending hours on it everyday and with a low budget. I've been researching since then and experimenting with looks but when it comes down to just getting your butt to do your hair and makeup, this is what works for me:

- Set up a makeup/hair area. Make it pretty. Make it glamorous. It can be a fancy mirrored vanity or a plain table, it doesn't matter, just make it your "station." Have everything organized and easily accessible.

- MUSIC. This has made the biggest difference in motivating me to get ready in the morning. It doesn't matter if it's on an iPod or a speaker, just make some playlists with your favorite songs and keep it playing while you get ready to get you in the mood.

- Tea/Coffee/Hot Chocolate/what ever you like to drink in the morning in a fancy teacup.

- To go with your fancy teacup, get yourself a luxurious robe/dressing gown and matching slippers.

When I wake up in the morning and put on my polka dot robe, feather slippers and have my green tea in my butterfly teacup, I go to sit down at my makeup table with the Beatles playing in the background and I feel like the only thing I can do is make myself more glamorous!

Thank you so much Lenore! I think the key for me is to make it fun. How has your motivation been lately?

I’ve actually been pretty blasé regarding getting up and doing anything. However, for the past week and a half, I’ve been on vacation. Curled up in my pajamas in a cabin with a fire and a good book doesn’t lend any help to wanting to get up and curl my hair. ;)

As usual, I’ve made the yearly promise to myself that THIS is the year I’ll take care of myself. Now just to keep it. I actually have several “resolutions” that happen to feed into each other and I THINK will help with my motivations.

I need to get my house in order as it’s crazy disorganized. I believe that disorganization is contributing to my lack of motivation. I can’t find things quickly so it’s just easier and less time consuming to throw my hair up into a pony tail and slap minimal makeup on before running out the door at breakneck speed every morning. It doesn’t help that my job is jeans/shirts/tennis shoes oriented so I don’t feel the NEED to do it up right. And as much as I’ve considered finding other work that would force me to dress up nice, I’m comfortable in my job and I like my customers (for the most part) so I think I just need to focus on making me a little happier with myself and then work might not seem so much like drudgery. Tonight, I’m planning on going through my vanity area and weeding out the things I don’t use. I have A LOT of stuff and maybe actually use about 5% (or less!) of it. I think by minimizing, I’ll actually get more use out of the area. Maybe even make room for a small iPod dock. :)

I’m going to make myself put eyebrow pencil, lipstick and perfume on daily. Period. If I do NOTHING else, this is getting done. And if I don’t have time to do it before I leave the house, I can always run into the restroom as soon as I get to work, or stay in the car an extra minute… but seriously, if I don’t have time for THOSE three things, I *really* need to re-evaluate my time.

I'm also going for actually making time for myself. I'm too busy being mom and wife that I let myself get stuck in a rut. I always feel like I never have time to do anything (set my hair, do my nails - hell, even SHAVE at times!) but I think I've finally realized that I *need* to do those things, and in order for me to do them, I need to make the time. I can't just expect magnificence if I don't put forth any effort, nor should I. The work that gets put into the "final product", as my mother-in-law calls it, is what makes it worth it in the end. After all, putting the work in shows yourself that you're important to you and worth the effort. When I'm dressed just so, my hair is curled, and my makeup is done makes me feel worthwhile and worthy of notice. It gives me confidence which runs over into other aspects of my life. I do better work, I'm more outgoing and friendly with my customers, and I just feel GOOD. That feeling should be my motivation... I just have trouble remembering it. :eusa_doh:

I am doing fairly well with having hair and make up done. Sometimes the make up doesn't get put on until late afternoon, but it does get put on!

As for the hair, I usually set it and get three days worth of styles out of it before having to set it again. The first day I just do a brush out, the second I pin the top up following one of the videos posted on this thread, and the third I do a back roll.

Still working on the clothes, but that will come.

I am so jealous Lenore! It reminds me of my honeymoon.. I didn't wear a lick of makeup the whole time, but for once felt completely justified because a made-up face just didn't feel right in the rainforest. :) Sometimes enjoying yourself is just more important!

I completely understand having an unglamorous job. I recently quit my job which at times got physical, so I really never could wear skirts or heels because I never knew what the day would consist of. I also got really dirty when I would have to move things around so my outfits were never cute. Add needing to wear Crocs on top of that and I just did not feel my best there (although I quit for a different reason). I resorted to basic makeup/blow-drying for work and then curling my hair, changing my clothes and adding more makeup when I got home.

I think organizing your vanity is a great idea! I have way too much makeup too. I put my daily makeup into a small, clear makeup bag and the rest of my makeup into a larger box. This way I don't need to dig through all of my makeup to get the products I wear everyday, but I still have access to all of my other makeup if I feel like changing things up. An iPod dock there would be amazing! It makes getting ready so much more fun. Good luck with your organizing!

I will make sure from this day forward I have on concealer, mascara, and blush everyday. We will keep each other accountable for our three items :p

I can't imagine being a mom, wife, and working! No wonder primping isn't the first thing on your mind. Give yourself a break if you miss some days.. it sounds like you've got a lot on your plate. I dress up for the confidence too. I just feel good knowing I put in the effort to put my best face forward. I'm hoping that if I keep doing it everyday that one day it will be no different than brushing my teeth- it's just what I do.

I hope you're enjoying your vacation. :)

Thank you for your contributions, ladies! Getting the vanity table in shape and putting on some nice music really helps. In my new appartement, I found a place for a vanity table for the first time ever. Using my fifties hand mirror already makes me feel better. Unfortunately, the lighting is really bad, so I'll have to improve that.

Maybe you have an idea for my main problem which is my "all or nothin attitude". I feel awkward when I have only my hair styled and don't wear fine clothes. I feel awkward when I wear nice clothes but didn't have time to set my hair. And, what's bothering me most: even when my hair and clothes are wonderful, I feel awkward when my make-up isn't. And I'm really bad at doing make-up, mostly because I have skin issues. I really don't know what to do about it. What do you think when you see a woman with great hair and outfit but with a bad make-up, or no make-up at all? I've been trying to improve my skin texture and my make-up skills but it's been of no much avail. Just too often I think "why bother with hair and outfit if the make-up'll suck anyway?" :(

Aside from a few differences, I could have written this! I just feel so overwhelmed with the housework and my family. It seems nothing belongs to me anymore, even my identity, because I am vicariously identified by my relationship with the members of my family (his wife and her mom). It's turned into a bit of an identity crisis, and I am lacking self-actualization. I have been spending a little time everyday doing 'me' things, regardless of what is going on in the house. (See, me-thing, happening right here:D) I'm not quite ready to wake up early and fix my hair, but I feel like I am slowly getting there.

I do it 'for me.' I feel confident and empowered and attractive.
The world 'is' a stage, it really is.
I always have a few wool dresses ready to throw on and accessorise with a belt! Voila - 2 minutes effort! But lifts me out of jeans and tee shirt mode! ( which takes the same time to put on!)

Head scarfs are versatile too! And QUICK! And cover things up.

If a bit of prep can do that each day then I'm repaid a thousand times over :)

Life's too short not to owe it to yourself to FEEL GREAT :)
