What makes a hat expensive?

I have one each of the new Strat and Stetsonian. The only aspect of both that's really unforgivable is the ribbon stitching: the ribbon on each is tacked terribly. I don't mind sending them off for new ribbon work, but at the price point, I shouldn't have to. Until I hear that this issue has been consistently addressed, I won't be ordering new colors--or new models, for that matter.

Thanks ManofKent, I've about exhausted the mass produced hats that I would want with the possible exception of some of the new Stetsons that may happen. I'm going to start going to some of the fine custom makers for future hats. there is just some colors and ribbon treatments that you can only get custom made. That and my head's too big for most of the vintage hats I would want.

I am so far from being any expert on the fine lines of hats or different felts that hats are made from, however it is easy to say that most of my Husband's vintage hats have a smoother feel to them then anything "modern" that have been purchased. One exception has been the Custom made hat from Tum Water hats that I had TonyB make for my Husband's birthday. It was made from a "western" felt body, however it is not as thick or stiff as most western hats would be, and when touching the surface of the hat it is so creamy feeling, soft and smooth. Perhaps some of the difference could be that a custom hat maker can spend more time on what they are making as compared to some of the newer factory hats?

That being said, one thing that is always helpful when one has to ponder about making a purchase of any hat, being here on the Lounge and having the ability to see what others have to say about a brand of hats or the reviews of what a custom hat makes has made, gives us Lounger's an advantage so that we can make a informative choice on what to spend hard earned money on!

bold1972 made good comment, spot-on As a hatters reputation grows, similar as the name of an oil painter artist grows, prices tend to elevate at their shops. NOT saying this is bad, just business. I've held prices of my hat the same since 2007, even though my out of pocket expenses have gone up.
