non contrast cuff is the best for black jeans you want to keep black, just buy black dye, and re dye them as needed, usually this pair also comes with stealth stitching (tonal stitching) so there is simply nothing to stop you from redyeing them black every year or so. just don't buy them tight since dyeing is probably require hot water and it might shrink the pants into skinny post redye.

No fear of me buying tight jeans ever again. I wore drainpipes in my teens and in my early 30s, back when only punks and metal heads were in them. In those days, you had to search hard to find them - it's one of life's great ironies that since I got into a wider leg, fashion swung back to the drainpipe and slimfits... Thing is, as middle age kicked in and my waist measurement got increasingly larger than my inside leg, I started to look like humpty dumpty in drainpipes...

Redying is definitely the way to go, now, if black greys out a bit. I've even considered just dying a blue pair I really like black if it makes it easier to find the fit/leg length (for a decent cuff) I'm after. Dylon do a great machine-dying capsule thing that has everything needed in it, just throw it in the machine (and do a couple of dark washes after that, just in case!).

I think redyeing blue into black would still leave that cold bluish tint, by it self it may look black but if you pair it with other black it will show that cold blue tint under it.

Iron Heart do black OD, and if fades are your thing they get some unusual and polarizing effects.

Possible. Black is funny like that. A lot of black clothes I've had have shown a grey, blue, brown or even green undertone as they fade. Same with car paint: black can be a nightmare to match. On 30s Austins, as memory serves, the black paint they used had a bluish undertone; on a Ford, the undertone was reddish. You'd never see it until you tried to touch up one with the other, then the mismatch was glaring.

LVC 1976 501 today, from the last Cone denim, US made run of Levi's in 2017.

I got them partly because they're so late in period that they were almost like modern Levi's, nothing that might stand out or seem costumey to those who see them, though the somewhat retro cut (and repro denim) is there for me to enjoy. The funny thing is, 1976 caught my eye because it made me think of Ramones, but of course the Ramones wore 505s, as buttoned 501s did not really catch on out on the East Coast until much later..

I'm guessing 505s were rather more narrow back in the day? Not sure if I've seen them, though. Years ago I had a pair of 521s that I remember liking when I was looking for something slim but not drainpipes. They wore out on the inner thigh pretty quick, though. 522s lasted a little better, for some reason. I also had a pair of orange-tab black ones - 615s, I think? - which wore quite well. Not bought Levis for about fifteen years, though. Briefly had a pair of black 501s in 2007ish that were okay, but I couldn't live with the hip-level "waistband".

True, and it does look great.

What I REALLY like is the indigo/black dye of IH. The warp has an indigo dye and the weft a black dye (or the other way round?), and this fades AMAZING with time. In most lights its pretty blackish with mid-blue fades in the wear areas, but in sunlight the whole things turns into some kind of "abyss" like blue.
While I find the Black OD truly badass and a perfect companion for a worn black leather jacket, the indigo/black really adds class to ANY outfit (including - IMO - a brown jacket) without looking at all too "dressy".

They were straight leg jeans, but if you look at the photos, you can see they had the 505s altered from the knee down to taper.

While I don't have IH, but I have indigo greencast x black (sulphur) jacket, and the color does develops nicely, it never turns into light blue, always looks kind of inky and then some stark contrast in worn areas

Yes, that sounds very similar. If and when the summer comes out again (ever), I will try to get some photos to represent the fades and the contrast.

One thing I do not enjoy about my IH 634 and 888 (and it could well be my unsporty build) is the way the back pockets give a jodpher or WW1 flying trouser effect. I like the 'top box' of these and wonder if the 666 would be as 'roomy' while eliminating the winged effect?

Anyone have 634/888 & 666?

I did try a pair of 777, thighs were OK, calves too tight, rise far too low.

It's the back pockets on the 634 & 888 with maybe a slimmer thigh that cause the wings I believe

How would you compare the 888 vs the 634? I also have an "unsporty build" and any kind of slim or skinny fit would not work. Can you still wear boots with the 888s? Do the 888s still have enough room in the top block and thighs compared to the 634s?
