$500 top end
That might be a tough nut to crack. I am assisting a friend of mine at the moment who is trying to purchase his first really nice leather jacket and he has also set a limit of $500. That pretty much rules out new jackets and most of the used jackets I'm finding are running closer to $600-700.
I would suggest that you search for Schott on eBay and see what is available in your size. They make almost every style of jacket imaginable, and with a little bit of luck you might find one in your size that meets your budget.

To this I would add that it's very possible to find a used Schott in nice condition for less than $500 on eBay. Also, the OP may want to check out Nordstrom CRack. That's where I picked up my brand new Schott 654 for less than $200. Selection will vary and is not predictable, but the CRack is a place to consider for those who are budget-conscious.

I concur with this. It won't be easy but not impossible. Set up searches IN EBAY (edit) tracking the brands with used jackets in that price range and wait. I just bought a truly-hardly used, perfect condition Vanson Hardcore for $202 (I skipped around my hotel room like an idiot on meth). Anyways...Vanson, Johnson Leathers, Bates, Schott, Cal Leathers and the very occasional Aero, Lost Worlds and Langlitz, etc. can be had in the $500 range if you are patient and lucky. While you are waiting save some more loot to expand the range.

Dennins, you are asking good questions here. I encourage you to take a look around and see what others have said, this gets asked quite a bit in these forums. Then have a suit-taylor or shop measure you up so you know your proper dimensions. The'n I would suggest looking at our own Classifieds forums here as there are many nice jackets around for sale here. I heavily encouarge buying a used jacket first, to test out the fit, style, etc and that way if it's not to your liking, you can easily sell it here on on ebay.

Edit, sorry I just saw you are a 44L suit size. I am as well. This would be too large for you, but at least gives an idea: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/thre...rcycle-jacket-sz-54-or-so.92650/#post-2356760

Dennis mate , Schott jackets off the peg are "true to size" and they do have good sizing info on their website.

I have 3 different Schott jackets in 44 chest , each fits a bit differently due to the cut/style , but all "fit" well

I'm 5. 11" , 90Kg/200lbs ,36" waist for what that may be worth

One of my 3 I bought new , a Café Racer 641 HH in Horsehide , quite expensive (VERY !) . From ebay in California. $700 USD plus post to Australia.

A stunning jacket , all my Harley riding mates here in Australia rave about it

The other 2 were a NOS 441PP from the 90's from the UK and a very good ( like new !) used 641 Steerhide café racer in Hong Kong ( both ebay again !)

These pair were half nearly the price of my first new 641 HH !

So it's well worth taking a wee while to research and look around.

Somebody in a size 44 should jump on the Good Wear/Himel Café Racer's for $999, found on the Good Wear site. With the USD way down against the Euro even the VAT tax wouldn't break the bank on this one.

Temperature went up so on today’s walk I wore my Aeromarine in russet goat with only a shirtjacket under it. I think it’s starting to crease nicely. Of course, this being goat it was super comfortable right at the start and there won’t be crazy creases and fades like CXL, but still, pretty nice sleeve creases.
