I wash my 634s in the washing machine (washing programme for delicate fabrics at 30 deg C = 86 deg F) - no shrinking or fading! Let them dry naturally - no dryer!!!

I still like my 634S Ironhearts, but I actually found the cut a little unflattering with the legs a bit "stove pipe" like and the denim a bit too heavy for everyday wear. I've gone to some slimmer cut jeans- Sugarcane fitted straight and Jeanshop slim straight- as my go to jeans.

What also helps in preventing excessive color loss in selvedge jeans is using Woolite for dark colors (black bottle) and limiting the amount of washing.

Mostly i'm wearing my Aero Stuart - two years in and really breaking in nicely. I've got a new camera so will try and take some shots at the weekend.

On Ironheart, I own three pairs and for the last 6 months have been wearing the 1955S model with the Aero Leather branded patch. I love them, they're high-cut, 50s style and seem to compliment my jackets. I've been through the whole OCD methods of caring for Japanese denim over the years and found that the best thing is to not be too precious. Save the first wash for as long as you can stand and then just wash when dirty, lo temp, regular powder. I guarantee you'll achieve the same results as all these specialist fabric conditioner, stick in the freezer type stuff.

hehe yeah I also just wash inside out, cold wash and with a small amount of powder. No softener tho because I heard it destroys the threads.

Stickin gthem in the freezer is just to kill bacteria if they smell before your first wash, or if you just want them to have less bacteria.
You know like sushi, 24h in under minus 20 makes it eatable.

I don't understand the worry about washing your denim jeans. I wear Levi's and when I buy a new pair, I wash them before I wear them. How much are you guys paying for these jeans that you have to be so careful anyway!!!

It's totally different than a modern day Levi's. It's raw, selvedge denim. You don't have to be careful washing them, but it's about achieving a desired effect. I think the Ironhearts are 350/pair now.

Yes exactly, there is no harm in washing them like normal jeans and you can wash before wear just as normal. Its just to get them faded - its easier to get this effect without washing because when worn they develop creases that fade when getting rubbed onto. If washed, the creases appear in slightly different locations so you dont get as much wear in the exact same places.

Here is pictures of a pair of flatheads, probably worn for a year or so before first wash:

Now when you have gone through all this, avoiding oil, dirt, baby puke and so on for a year then you dont just want it all to bleed all over the place or get a 80´s stonewash effect (like my first one did) so this is why people are genreally more careful when washing raw denim. Plus the more powder and higher temp, the more blue will wash away and the contrast of the fadings will be less.

LOL Butte, it does put you in a different mind set. I find that I wash all my shirts/pants less now. I don't go a year with the denim, probably more like 4 months, but I don't have the great fading/contrast that Griff does.

Butte, I think you should buy a pair and see what you think! You'll never get a better fitting pair of jeans. Kind of like a leather coat, initially the raw denim is tight and stiff, but then molds to your body. Just be sure to downsize, as the cotton will stretch. I want to point out that those Flatheads arent mine. I just found them and showed for reference.

Im still working on getting a good pair. My first pair I didnt wash inside out so they got wierdlooking, I had to bleach them in clorine and they turned out *very* light so they are summer jeans only....barely. My second pair got alright, but not quite there so Im hoping for the IronHearts.

And Butte there is a great feeling of not having to think "what pants should I wear today" since you wear the same ones every day :lol:
