Too many good movies out there! I guess my personal favorites would be the first half of Full Metal Jacket (I'm a former Marine, and it brings tears of laughter to my eyes), and The Longest Day. Runners up include 12 o'clock High, Bridge on the River Kwai, and Das Boot.

Oh my gosh. I don't know that I could narrow it down, but I'll give it a shot:

1. The Longest Day
2. Von Ryan's Express
3. The Dirty Dozen
4. The Sands of Iwo Jima
5. The Devil's Brigade
And many, many more that I can't think of right now...(it's late and I'm tired!)

Without even thinking my brain said, "Zulu".
When the brain started thinking, it thought of lots of the others listed here.
But the first automatic reaction was "Zulu".

For pure excitement , courage, filming, and again, excitement........... another vote for Simon Wincer's
fabulous "The Lighthorsemen".

Why isn't there a proper version of it on dvd after all this time?

Regards, Gerry.

How I Won the War, Richard Lester's anti-war(ish) comedy starring Michael Crawford, Roy Kinnear and naturally John Lennon is one of the more obscure films out there and on my list of films. I haven't seen it in years, but as I recall, they are on an advance recce to set up a cricket pitch in anticipation of Allied advance.

Thanks. Actually used it as a leadership training film in the Corps. Excellent examples of various leadership styles, decisions under stress, etc. I also used some of the old public service films from the WWII period...had to make sure my men were aware of "good time girls."
