Rainy day here @ Rock Bottom and I'm bored so I thought I might toss my hat in the ring for Stingymas with my 3X Stetsonian with Selv-Edge. Easily meets the requirements with a 1.5 inch brim.

This hat looks similar. It is currently listed on Ebay as "FRENCH MORRETON 1950s FEDORA HAT~CASHMERE FLECK GRAY". Absolutely gorgeous! Not sure if that is the same as yours, but I may low-bid on this one based on how nice your hat looks - providing, the creepy mannequin head does not come with it... View attachment 664772

Here's my opinion: I believe that at a certain point in the life of French hat makers there was a "reunion" of those who remained to deal with the hat crisis. In the sixties or early seventies, if I'm not mistaken. I had found some documented information, but I don't have it at hand now. This merger meant that felt was produced, sometimes of excellent quality, sometimes a little less, by a single source and then modeled according to the taste of the manufacturers.
I have several hats from that era and some are on my list of those that can leave for other shores. Just ask

I reiterate the above with a clarification: I don't think Morreton was written on the sweatband otherwise I would have sold it with his own brand. For French heathered hats from that era I have several to sell. The important thing is to indicate the size

Hard to say just by the felt alone, Gary. The ribbon was added on later.

Just to elaborate a little. The hat came to me from Daniele with both ribbon and sweatband replaced by Penumbra Hats. No tags or labels. I’m sure, though, that if the original sweatband had a maker’s label, Daniele would have let me know at the time. The only markings are on the crown, shown below.

Well… in all fairness… it’s a made up holiday. I suppose they all are more or less... but anyway… no hard rules here… whatever fits into the short end of your collection. One man’s wide brim might be another’s stingy. For me personally I shoot for 2 or under…. But I did throw in a 2 1/8 the other day.

The main idea Mike and I had was… as often is the case these days shorter brim hats not getting as much love around here… or even disparaged as being low quality (often rightly so) We wanted to show there were along the way hats if less ample brims that were still of high quality.

Late again, but here I am, nonetheless for the annual Stingymas event! I pulled out this factory 2nd from Cavanagh. Labeled as “Superior Felts,” because they got that much correct.

On the 4th Day of StingyMas…

Royal Coachman by Dobbs. A hat that, to me, really embodies the spirit of StingyMas. The 1 7/8 brim on this medium to dark blue/grey felt is finished with a Guild Edge (Cavanagh edge) and even features a wind trolley and decorative rear sweat stitching. Shows that Dobbs was still producing quality hats with all the bells and whistles and a modest brim well into the 1960s.

I like it Simeon. A perfect addition to the celebration. Back bows often fell into this shorter brimmed category and miss out on some well deserved love in their own right due to their less common ribbon treatment. It’s like the island of misfit toys but for hats!
