What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Do you ever wonder what percentage of the hats posted here are actually worn on a daily basis vs worn strictly for the photo's and then put away???

I’m still a relative newbie with Fedora Lounge but I’ve got a feeling that most of us really wear our hats that we post. I can only answer for myself, but I wear the ones I post simply because I like to wear them.

I’ve got several felt bowlers I haven’t posted yet because it’s just too dang hot. In the Fall when you see me post pictures of me wearing them, you can take it to the bank that I’m really wearing them for the day.

Probably depends. I know when the day comes that I can finally order an Advintage hat or two the intention would be regular year long use. Of course they have the reputation for that. My two Fed 4 Deluxes are daily use of course. But if I can ever get an awesome vintage hat that’ll probably be pictures and special occasions only. I would hate to be the one to do the old boy in.

I posed the question because I see some very valuable hats posted here that made me wonder. It wasn't meant as anything to stir up trouble.

Are those valuable hats actually worn out in public, sweated in & subjected to the daily wear and tear?

Or are they treasured collectibles that are photographed and not worn.

Just something that made me go hmmm...

I don’t have a hat I won’t wear.

I understand what you’re saying, but I also believe that vintage hats like to be worn and seen. If it dies as a result then it’ll die happy. If it’s a historical museum piece then that’s an obvious exception.

Excellent point! I suppose I can’t disagree with you though the history major in me wouldn’t help but get a bit nervous

I think its great. The hat is light, slightly thinner than the western weight felts I am use to. The ponce is finer than the Stetson Drifter and coarser than the Open Road. I would put it in par with similar priced factory hats. It is handmade but I can not compare it to other handmade hats as my other hats are factory made. This was my summer splurge.

I wear mine… some more ruggedly than others for sure. Some are more babied. While I am very inspired by @Short Balding Guy and his working stable. I can’t quite bring myself to do the heavy sweating in the finer hats.

Watching Eric running a chainsaw in a rare and pristine 1940s fedora caused a minor panic attack the first time I saw it. Now it’s just part of the wonder or The Fedora Lounge.

I really like that brim curve on this hat.

The UK temperature topped 40C today, that's 104F, not exactly a felt hat day. Tina told me that wearing light colours helps reflect the heat, but I tell you, it can get warm inside an old MG. No air-con of course but the old car does have a clever cooling system. You wind the windscreen open, then, along with the cooling breeze you get dead flies, car fumes, dust and the occasional discarded, but still smouldering, cigarette butt. The joy of an old car. The battered Biltmore was more than a compliment for the shirt and trousers although I did think about the bespoke brown straw that Esther made me.

Seems that this is a widespread superstition, but nobody is exactly sure why. One explanation is that spirits would hide between your locks of hair and could make it to your bed using the hat. Another is that a deceased person would be laid out on the bed fully clothed, with his hat on his stomach. Laying the hat on the bed would therefore be a foretelling of the death of a person. A more prosaic reason would be that head-lice would make to the bed via the hat.

I don’t generally buy into the supernatural but I don’t rule it out completely either. Lol Superstitions of old may be silly at best because I believe they tend to exaggerate themselves as they’re handed down. That said, I think lots of them were rooted in something true or at least relevant to their time - such as your head lice example.

Sorry to go off-topic but that reminded me of something. Several years ago I was dealing with an elderly woman client of mine, and we were talking about our pets. We were specifically talking about our black cats, and I mentioned that I actually had two of them. She looked at me dead seriously and said I shouldn’t have taken in a second black cat because now I won’t have any grandchildren. So far she’s right.

I’m gonna keep my hat off the bed just to be safe.

And light as a feather. Remarkable how they got the felt this thin. I’m sure it would not hold up under too much stress. But for some lazy shade on a hot day it does quite nicely.
