Well, it's nice to know I can be a positive inspiration to somebody! Nice LE. Do you have one of the modern Stetsonians? If so, how do they compare?

I have a tawny Stetsonian just like yours, except (of course) mine is bigger than yours.

The subtle differences are less visible than tactile. If there were one characteristic of the New York that seems to work better than the Stetsonian, it’s the malleability of the felt and its ability to hold the form. I like both hats, but I’m still tweaking the Stetsonian from time to time.

Don't see too many of those. That sucker's going to fetch a pretty penny on eBay in a few decades.

No.. for now I am sticking to vintage. I think if I ever do a custom... my first will be having an old one rebuilt/customized. But who knows what the future will bring

Thanks Steve! I left the Stetson pin on this one because it's so nice that Stetson/Matt Deckard should get some bragging rights. The Tobacco Brown is nice and rich and the felt is very malleable.

Thanks gents, this is even an outlet hat apparently, given the punched sweat. The only real flaw I noticed was a teeny bit of an uneven pounce at the center of the top of the crown, but a hat sponge fixed that up pretty well. I only ever recall seeing them from that one guy on EBay (where I got mine) and JJ.

If I was your size I don’t think I’d have gone the custom route. Gannon makes a great hat, but if for the same amount I could buy 6-10 vintage hats in my size and in styles I prefer it would be hard to consider a custom.

Herbert Johnson ‘Genuine Panama’
4 7/8 Crown with Optimo Crease
1 1/2 black grosgrain ribbon
2 1/2 brim front 2 7/8 sides
Approx 14-16 WPI

This Herbert Johnson Panama arrived several weeks back. At 7 1/4 its probably a tad too big. But it’s just too beautiful not to get to wear at least a few times It has a nice optimo crease that measures to 4 7/8. And the dimensional brim is actually a bit wider on the sides than in front. It does have a small crack toward the rear of the brim behind the black grosgrain bow. I’ll prob take a shot at repair with either wood glue or book binding glue if I can find. I think I counted the weaves to be about 14-16 WPI The 13 Old Burlington Street address on the box and sweat indicates dating between 1975 to 1988.

Because of the size and soft nature of the brim, it creates a bit of a curvature. I’m not sure how it wears best. Might be brim up is best.. but it didn’t photograph well that way on my head. Brim down the curve is a bit accentuated and maybe slightly feminine. I did find one spot where just the very front of the brim is turned down and looked good from the front. But not as sure on the sides.

I’ve been actively looking for one for a couple of years with no-joy. They are not common hats.

I get what you are saying... and conversely with limited availability of vintage in your size. Custom gives you the flexibility to get styling that works for you without breaking the bank or having to search to the ends of the earth.

I also enjoy the idea of re-use so for me in that aspect vintage is a great option. Not that I have a problem at all with new. It’s just another plus for me when it comes to vintage.

Glad you left the pin on, Jared. I’m not normally a fan of such “clutter,” but this one is special! I stopped at the side shot and thought how great that pin worked on that hat.

That's sunbathing weather, Randy. I got out for an hour long walk today. It was snowing quite heavily, but it was those big flakes that are barely heavy enough to fall. A lovely day, even if it was 3 degrees. Ha ha.

That is a great looking bowler. i need to get one of the lower crowned sort. But for the foreseeable future I'll be sticking with fur.
