Late 60s Stetson Playboy. The condition and felt color and pinkish liner is what made me pull the trigger on this BIN. I’d much rather it be from the 40s/50s, but it’ll fill a hole in my small collection nicely.
It may have been one of the last models before giving the Playboy name the axe? Ive always imagined ole Hugh and his well adorned mansion had something to do with that.

Very nice Randall. They were still making "real" hats in the 1960s. All the right bells and whistles on this one. I too desire a 40s/50s vintage one, but this one is a great find.

Mayser in blue (blau in German). Started the day with the first rain in weeks.

Oh man, that color! Doing what a hat should, keeping the rain off your noggin. Love that overcoat. I think my coats have seen their last outings, I'll miss them until fall. Love this one a whole bunch my friend!

I don’t think that is a late 1960s hat. Maybe mid 1950s? By the late 1960s the Playboy or Playboy II was a while different hat. Your size tag says 1950s or earlier to me...I’m betting mid 1950s.

Got out for a bit of a bike ride this afternoon. The wind was ferocious. I wore this Czech made Basque and it served the purpose well.

Ha! Thank you buddy! Our Governor just reversed course from yesterday and is no longer mandating wearing masks in retail stores on the 12th when business begin opening up again. So, I still might get stopped and frisked if I happen to wear that get up!

Afternoon folks. I headed out for a jaunt about the neighborhood after a couple of Zoom Mtg.'s. I picked the Stetson Whippet off the rack. Same one I wore last evening. It is a "new to me" hat. Quarantined, white gas'd, steamed and blocked the hat was ready to wear. Yesterday I wore the hat proudly. Today the same. Why the paragraph, because I believe it is blue not gray.

This afternoon I was seeking a medium gray or dark gray hat to go for my jaunt. Out I went. When I got home and wiped my brow and the leather sweat I noticed the felt color. It is blue. Unusual. I pulled out a different gray Whippet to compare. It is "blue."

This Whippet has a 2.25" brim and the medium gray Whippet a 2.5 " brim. They have similar liners. The sweat markings are a bit different. I will have to do a more digging as to the age of the hats.

Was I fortunate and found a "rare" blue Whippet? Or is it a gray that shows it's blue heritage? I will try again in direct sunlight tomorrow. Tonight is overcast and high humidity. (Rained for much of the day.)

The hats wear and look different to my eye. The crown height measure the same. When you bring the hats to open crown the blocking appears to be the same. The snap of the brim begins at the same place. Is the difference just a quarter of an inch of brim on a side? Amazing.

It is fun to be curious about a hat's felt color after the crazy meetings that I went through today.

My wife and I have been very good about getting out for a walk every day. I have been able to switch to straw as the weather in Oregon is unusually warm. My standard has been a Cappas Bogart straw that I got from Mike Miller way back in the early days of my hat addiction.

I don’t think that is a late 1960s hat. Maybe mid 1950s? By the late 1960s the Playboy or Playboy II was a while different hat. Your size tag says 1950s or earlier to me...I’m betting mid 1950s.

You could be right, because the “Manila” size tag is usually a late 50s thing, however, the cheapened 1 1/2 brown sweatband is usually a mid 60s thing. The pink glued in liner and liner logo is seen in mid to late 60s models. The sweatband bow for this hat was still in use for 60s model hats and there’s a price tag on the inside that says $11.95 which is also 60s pricing.
The lack of any reorder tags on the inside is another tell tell.
I’ve owned a late 50s Playboy and it had a much better felt quality than this one.
Nevertheless, like @Redfokker said, it’s still a good hat and I’m proud to own it and it’ll stay in my stable of hats for as long as this life lets me keep it...no matter when it was made.

My 30 days of hats would not be complete without an homburg entry. Hence.. an appearance by the Lord Kent “Custom Made” Beaver 15 Homburg as it is currently my only such hat. While as Stefan and Steve both taught me you can “dress down” the homburg with side dents... I do still prefer to wear this hat to dress up a bit for ‘special occasions’. Today that special occasion will be to celebrate Day 28 of the 30 Days to 30 hats. With this entry we have now completed 4 weeks! Hooray!!!

A couple cool details on this hat for me... the little flyer shoved into the sweatband for the hat store Joes Hat Corner.... and initials on the sweat that matched my grandfather’s

The long oval tag might be throwing me. I know the rectangular black size tags that were in use by 1963 had “long oval” on them along with the size. Your size tag, and even more so the proportions, just don’t look late 1960s to me. It’s a good looking hat whenever it was made.

Still not sure how I look in the big brim Westerns, but for a $1.99 I figured I would experiment with it. The Wife likes it.....
