With old, thin felts, I try not to crease sharp angles, as it can create/worsen weak spots. Ignacio taught me that.

I'm still liking this one a lot as a bicycling companion. Not the coolest of straws, even with the vents, but great shade for the eyes.

I think if it already has the crease you’d be safe as long as you don’t continue “working” the felt in those areas. I’m also sure Ignacio knows more about it than I do.

I'd say the hat looks great! Only issue I see is the bow tie. If it's actually a dinner jacket, then pure black is the only choice.

I'm in a stifling hot Beijing with work last week and this, wearing three hats in rotation. Toiday is the turn of my eight-dart, unlined and undyed linen Cordova cap; tomorrow I will be wearing a grey Akubra Capricorn. The other hat is an SJC wabash denim eight dart cap, made by Barry Simmonds.

I wore this one into today.
It's my new Royal Stetson Stratoliner, an honest to goodness, tagged, 7 1/8 .... that happens to fit like a 6 7/8.

I did go into it with my eyes wide open. Cruising the Bay looking for action I happened on a Buy Now Stetson Strat for $100. It didnt sound right, but I had to read the description. It stressed that this was a SMALL hat, estimating is little as 6 1/2. I pined for a small head and read the ad to the end. The ad closed with the remarkable claim that it used to be a 7 1/8, but shrank over the years. Shrank 5 sizes?
If a hat shrunk that much either the felt or the leather would be accordioned. They couldn't both shrink that much in unison.
The seller had something wrong.
I contacted him to ask why he believed it was once a 7 1/8, a tag?
He affirmed a tag, and I made an offer, saying that I'm an aspiring hatter and better be able to make a hat tagged my size fit, or hang up my spurs.
He didnt' want to accept my bid. I didn't understand. It's small.
This was actually refreshing, because I'd been buying sevens from people estimating size as 7 to 7 1/4, with no qualms about shipping them, and was beginning to suspect that some of the time it was calculated, to put their hat into higher demand territory.
I explained this, said that I believed the hat was small, but doubted it was quite as small as he was guessing, and assured him I wouldnt return over the size if everything else was as he said.
He said LOL and accepted my $80 offer.
He was right. It's small. I'd guess about 6 7\8. Too much to just toss it on the cowboy stretcher.
After a good brushing the felt has a nice sheen and is in very good shape, if very faded. It shapes dry with little effort. The size tag under the sweat says 7 1/8, though no other tag is legible and the sweat stamping is sparce, the back of the sweat is split and the reed missing. No simple stretching would fix this.
But a hatter could.

I actually didn't wear a hat yesterday, daytime, as I was outdoors doing very dirty things, and my follically-challenged head is paying for it now, as it was 85 degrees and sunny.

Last night, however, as the temperatures dropped, I wore my cream w/rust ribbon Royal Stetson for a night out.
