I believe most Marines that wear a subtle Marine Corps Emblem, such as Bill’s, wear it out of reverence to the Corps. A self salute for having accomplished something in life. Kinda like showing a picture of the birth of your child, not to seek praise but to let others share and reflect on periods of life’s glories.
I still get embarrassed and misty-eyed when people comment, and feel completely unworthy to have either.

The type of hat is Ticino (a Swiss-Italian river) the color is the famous "Mirtillo"

Size 60 cm or 7 1/2 US, very large to be a production controlled by Borsalino

The hat has all the characteristics of having been made by Vanzina. The felt is very thick and with a slightly hairy finish.
It has a marked consistency like all hats with this brand.

The crown is impressive 12.5 cm already bashed, the brim are 5.5 cm.

Traveling today in a vtg.50's Stetson 3X Clear, Fifteen. This is a terrific wide ribbon fedora. I wear wide ribbon felt hats less often than mid or thin.

This hat is an immediate fav as the felt is glorious. The felt on this Fifteen rivals a 50's 7X that I have. Malleable so that the crown or brim take a shape easily. A dress weight felt that takes a shape and keeps it until brushed by my hand. The felt is dense that is soft to the hand.

The hat was sold at The Kleinhans Co., Buffalo, NY. This was a high end mens clothing store (Kleinhans Co. was in business from 1893-1992).

Above is a pic of the Kleinhans Hat Department display in the 50's.

Today...traversing the hat trail i spied Ol Dirty Berty peaking out. She’d been hanging out with a bunch of Italians so i gave her the day. She’s old, wrinkly, not to fancy but ain’t dead yet. Though the Old Girl’s sweatband looks like a teenager.

How does the Everyman compare to Penman's handmade hats? I was considering getting an Everyman Indy, but was strongly considering holding out for one of his handmade ones. I scoured the Penman thread, and was curious about the difference with an opinion coming from one of his paying customers.

It's not a custom hat, but factory made with an 80% / 20% rabbit/beaver blend Brazilian (?) felt that is very close in quality, IMO, to the Winchester beaver felt used by many US custom hatters. But different. It seems tougher to me, without being too much thicker if that makes sense. I love mine, and would not sell it for the $250 I paid for it.

But John's customs are very nice, and can run $500 and up depending on the felt you choose and any other custom touches. For an Indy hat, I love the Everyman, although I have changed it from the center crease John originally steamed in for me to a diamond crease. I grab it when it looks rainy outside but I'm still wanting a somewhat dressy hat to go with a leather jacket or sports coat.

I do not hold the same high regard of the non-Indy hat, unfortunately. The felt is from a US supplier and not near the quality of the Indy offering. If John uses the Brazilian factory again, I will consider buying more Everyman hats in grey/granite, dark moss, steel, navy etc, etc.

Mayser's "Supra" date stamped November 14, 1950. Johann Zehme München was the Royal Bavarian Court Supplier (est. 1834). Unfortunately the famous store closed in 2012 and was replaced by Prada. Here is a story from 2012 and interestingly some of the comments don't match the story content.

I have neglected taking photos of Mayser Paper Labels. This one is actually date stamped November 14, 1950 (14.11.50) so an extra bonus.

The inside sweatband seam is also date stamped!

Thanks for the input Doug. I've been coveting a Raiders hat since I was a kid, even moreso now that I'm older and actually wear hats. It seems that John is the go-to guy when it comes to a nice, near authentic Indy look. I was originally sold on the Everyman, but am leaning toward a custom rabbit at this point.

Thanks for the input Doug. I've been coveting a Raiders hat since I was a kid, even moreso now that I'm older and actually wear hats. It seems that John is the go-to guy when it comes to a nice, near authentic Indy look. I was originally sold on the Everyman, but am leaning toward a custom rabbit at this point.

John posts every hat he makes on fb, and his Raiders hats are superb, especially in contrast to some of the other Indy hat makers out there.
