I continue with the series of heather felts bought in France

This magnificent example has no name only bears the inscription inside the dome "feutre de poli" which signifies fur felt

Like the others it seems to have been partially finished

The seller attributes it to one of the great producers, Bouteille, of Chazelles sur Lyon, historical disrtict of the French hatters

The felt, long-haired, is a melange of fur and wool with the shades you see well in this photograph

The felt is thick and very malleable and the ribbon of exquisite workmanship, even if a little curled by bad storage

Donning my own refurbed black Borsalino again this early A.M. for a Noir effect. I've learned that you don't want to discount black hats. I used to hate them with a passion but if done right they can turn out to be a pretty impressive lid...tall straight crown and a 3 inch snap brim on this one

I'd like to add myself to the list who love the look of that hat.

Terry this pic is for the archives. Such a perfect display and being black, even more so! The black 3” incher suits you very well. Not sure why you worry about either. Many covet such a hat!

Paris accord... jacket by Lanvin, hat by Stetson. Some unusual finishing trim in this depression era real nutria quality. The pitch on the sweatband stitching is about as fine as it gets. For you old timers, this hat was originally gleaned from eBay by eagle-eyed FL member Zetwal. I purchased the hat from him.

No Playboy here, but this Borsalino Savoy has soft felt that molds like clay... clay furfelt, yeah, that's the ticket. Classic back ribbon on grey felt. Beautimous!

My mustache, like all my hair, is getting lighter/grayer by the day. I need some of whatever Terry uses to stay young.

That is a hat I'd walk to Buffalo for. Always a thrill to see it, Alan. It sure reminds me of the Arminto found here.

Thank you Alan. Very interesting and classy underbinding on this Raw Edge. My only other recollection of similar treatment is from the Colonel’s collection, i believe. And then the thin edge binding on one of mine. These must be special orders is all i can come up with.

These clips were a fascinating fashion accessory from the early century. I have a box of them if anyone wants one. I tried putting one in a hat that was not very "soft", it pulled the sides out and changed the fit drastically. I think the hat needed to be more "weathered." To see this one with the clip intact is a treat.

Mike, Thank you! The felt on this one is very receptive to the clip (also the very tall crown). It's hard to describe without having the felt in hand. Do any of your clips have "Dermotta" on them?

Thanks guys. That Arminto with under binding is a good catch. So many variations within the same felt quality/price point. There must have been a sea of possibilities back in those days.
