Carl Kellner Hamburg - J. Hückel´s Söhne "Derby". This hat was modified along the way and arrived (November, 2012) in a Campaign Hat Form so also stiffened. The crown was also extended (see photos below). The original hat was made in the 1930s but not sure when the modifications were preformed although they were well done.

Felt spacer strip stitched to the crown about one inch above the brim line was added after paper label. The ribbon was either reattached or replaced.

Here you can see the remnents of the JHS "Derby" label which is original to the hat.

Here you can clearly see the felt strip strip that was added to heighten the crown.

Very interesting, Steve. Must have been quite a bit of work and it makes you wonder why they chose to do it like that, instead of reblocking it.

You both look great, Max. What a vacation too! Any local vintage hat finds? Had to ask. :)

Nah... Everything is tourist-grade stuff. I saw a red rabbit felt raw-edged brim Borsalino for €375, and a narrow brim Vicuña for €535.

Then I called places in different cities looking for a beaver sombrero cordobés, and the best I could find were rabbit felts.

When I called Sombrerería Maquedano, reputedly the oldest hat shop in Sevilla, the woman who answered the phone actually told me that beaver hats were forbidden in Europe, because beavers are almost extinct.
I guess someone should quickly inform FEPSA before they disappear.

Do you wear felthats in the summer? It's not too warm? I only wear them in colder days.

I much prefer felt, but this time of the year I only wear them infrequently: cool mornings, trips to the coast, or high elevation. I’m learning to appreciate straw hats more, but they just don’t have a place in my heart like fur felt does.

A coffee morning with a Strat! Hard to beat that combo!

Early morning my dog and I were out. I was wearing a vtg. inspired custom hat, VS (art-lite silvermist beaver felt). The hat was inspired by the vtg.Stetson Weston.

This was the same hat as the Whippet, but with a welted brim edge. Great clean look.

Have not seen a Weston in real life. I continue to look for a Weston, as this would be an excellent hat to wear about. In the meantime my VS gets wear

I got back home and switched hats to enjoying the early morning sun. I switched to a vtg.Stetson Stratoliner. This gray 50's thin - ribboned hat is in minty condition. It pairs well with morning coffee.

Stefan, we should invite our American brethren over for a hat appreciation and petting convention. Hopefully Manfred will be in on it, too. Holland, Germany, and Denmark. How better can it get
emoji145.png

HOW MUCH better?! We need @DanieleTanto!!!

You are so right, Charlie. I forgot to mention Daniele and Italy. My so bad.

In that case you might never make it back to the US with all the hats to pet!

And can we bring Steve, @mayserwegener? What would a European hat event be without him?!

Of course. It wouldn't be a hat convention without Steve, Daniele,

Bring it on

Somebody needs to text @Joao Encarnado!!

I thank Charlie for the call to arms and all the rest of the EU gang for appreciation.
Without Steve (mayserwegener) it is completely useless to think of a convention on European hats, but there is a big problem: his collection is in Baltimore
After these considerations I expand, proposing the topic of discussion: "In Europe there are no beavers";)
I would also add that, as every year, in late spring I invited travelers in Italy to visit Verona, it is absolutely worth it, and with the opportunity to meet for some considerations on the hats, so far I have not had answers...
