What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

My latest AMAZING (to me, at least) score: a late 1950s Stetson, 7X, Clear Beaver, Boss of the Plains, with the original box.

3.5” brim, and the open crown is 5.5”, with a “skinny” grosgrain ribbon. The Miller Stockman files from 1957 through 1962 confirm that era’s BOP as being of these dimensions.

Some not-altogether-unattractive hand-smudging, showed that mine had once been shaped in a rather gentle cattleman’s crease, with a slight roll to the brim, and I’ve returned it to that shape for now. If this configuration was good enough for some pretty-well-to-do westerner when I was about 5 years old, it should be good enough for me, at least for now!

I have now stopped believing there are certain hats I will never acquire. There are surely many I may never acquire, but I’ve stopped believing their acquisition by me is an impossibility. :D:D:D

First photo is from the OFAS listing, the rest are by me.

Today I'm wearing a vintage Stetson Stampede I converted into a teardrop crowned fedora. The conversion is not quite complete, but the weather is so nice today, I couldn't resist taking it out for a spin.

Over the years I have notice many of these Stetsons for sale online. They are 4X Beaver felt from back when that title held some weight, so I figured they might make nice fedora conversions. I recently purchased one that was the size and price pt. I was looking for. I must say... I do not regret it.
Because of it's western DNA the brim is rather stiff, but I was surprised at how velvety-supple the crown was. Both the brim and crown were quite easy to work. I trimmed the brim down to 2 5/8", and hand shaped the crown without a block. Unfortunately I am still undecided on what color/style ribbon I want, so for now, I am using a temporary elastic band I made for just such occasions. I'm leaning towards a dark-olive or charcoal colored band, and I will update the pics once I finish it.

Looks like a fedora with a heavy flange to me. I tend to think of Homburgs/Lord's hats as having a more symmetric pencil rolled edge (except for some very old hats with D'Orsay brims).

Fedora or Homburg, it still looks very nice!

Me too. What would you call it ? Homberg... Lord's hat ... or ??

Stetson 4x cowboy hats are one of my favorites for a fedorish conversion. Good base hats to play on without spending a ton of money. Nice color selection too... Ive got an orangish one thats almost done.. Im real fond of something besides brown black and silver lol... These projects have made me keep a good supply of different size and color ribbons... sometimes I have 3 or four different configurations before I decide and sew it on.

Don't be fooled by the bright sunshine the photo was taken before the storm broke last night.
My bespoke Gamble & Gunn would be a rather expensive loss if the high wind has it's way.

Tina made me laugh when I mentioned the strong wind. "Definitely a pants day," she joked, "nobody is going to see my frillies." Years ago, when we lived in London, a high wind caught Tina's dress and treated everyone to see her stockings. She heard a crash and looking round saw some driver, staring at her underwear, had run into the car in front. Oops!
His insurance claim might make for interesting reading.
Dapper as always, Robert! A splendid ensemble!

Wow! Great job! And that band is really what I'm going for as well. I've just got to settle on the right color.
