This hundred year old Mikado is a favorite from my collection of straw hats and perhaps the second most interesting thing to come out of Roswell, New Mexico. It was finished in high execution by the Frank H. Lee company sometime during the 1920s. Lee Hats was founded in 1887 and at its height employed 1500 workers in Danbury, CT. The brand became a part of Stetson Hats around 1960 and the Danbury factory was shuttered in 1964. Stetson's manufacturing plant in Philadelphia closed not long after.

Enjoying this mid-70 degree summer day in my Dobbs Twenty made for Geo I. Eakle, a hat shop and brand founded in 1910 and closed in 1981. They were initially located at 1534 Market Street in Philadelphia, PA but moved to 1628 Market Street some time in the 1920s. Based on the markings and labels, it's pretty safe to say this hat was made in 1967. I included a snapshot of George H. Eakle's obituary, which I retrieved from the good folks in the dedicated "Geo I. Eakle" thread and the part where his wife describes how much he loved hats is particularly touching.

Another miserably hot day here. I cant wait for cold weather so I can pair nice jackets with nice hats in the morning pics!

Had to make a road trip this morning... ( I made an adult beverage resupply run a few miles over to the next non-dry town lol) The lid of choice was one of the cowboy conversions...

This one started life as a big former "Stetson Gus". Trimmed about 1-1/4" off the brim so now its got a slimmer 2-1/4" brim. Have played with the bash and folded it in on top so that the crown is about 3/4" shorter. Deeper top bash than most hats, but its something you just have to learn to work around on many cowboy conversions. Its still a fairly thick, heavy felt, but Ive done a couple alcohol baths so a LOT of the stiffener has been removed. Its WAY softer than the average Cowboy "Hardhat" but still holds a bash nicely. Definitely now a bit cooler to wear in hot sun with about a pound of shellac removed. Haven't really decided exactly what to do for a ribbon, but temporarily it sports a spare Panama ribbon that was laying around. I kinda like the look, and it helps camouflage the fact that it once was a larger cowboy. Turned a FREE bigger hat that wasn't getting worn, into a fun little knock-around hat that I don't have to worry about.

Figured Id trot out another Stetson cowboy conversion this morning. Its a bit taller crown than most I have, and I love the color. Wanting to re-flange the brim to get a bit more curl to snap up in back, but have been thinking of adding ribbon edge binding to this one first. Just cant decide whether to do narrow or wide
