Thanks, Stefan. It's good to be back

Thanks, Steve. Good to see you around again!

The upside of a less than stellar summer is that it allows you to wear felts all year round, Steve. Nice Barbisio; one of the softest hats I've had. Ah, I see you said the same thing.

Beater or not: that is one mighty fine hat.[/QUOTE]

Good to see you around, John. And congrats on finding your first Stratoliner.

Aahhh, that looks just soooo smooth, Greg. Wonderful.

I haven’t yet replaced the sweatband in this old Stylepark, but this overcast fairly stagnant day gave me a chance to wear it for a grocery run today. The felt on this hat is very unusual. It is extremely soft and light weight... it is fairly thin but not incredibly so. I originally thought from the photos it would be wool. But it does not feel like most wool hats I’ve handled Or fur felts for that matter. Maybe some combination of wool and fur... I do not know. What I can say it shapes with incredible ease and holds just about any shape within a fraction of an inch and it does this without hardly any feel of stiffener whatsoever.

The 2 inch brim is adorned with spiral stitching and a very tight overwelt edge with tiny stitching. It creates an almost cavanagh like appearance. I believe this spiral stitching also ads function of additional support of the very soft felt for the brim.

The Stylepark tag inside indicates it was manufactured in the Camden, New Jersey Stylepark factory. This factory was sold December of 1941 to a chemical company as reported by NY Times

https://www.nytimes.com/1941/12/10/...emical-firm-camden-concern-gets-property.html

So it appears this hat would have been produced 1941 or earlier. It does seem to have 30s proportions with its tall crown and shorter brim. Eventually I will have the sweatband replaced and return it to full service.

It deserves a new sweatband for sure. Nice find. Quite common for these heathers to be a mix of wool and fur, so that may well be the case for this one as well.

Congrats to you and the rest of the family, Alan! That one certainly doesn't look vintage.

You got more Xs going on there than an algebra test, Cuz, but it sure looks like a good solution to the summer time heat we've had lately. Enjoy and stay well. Great Stetson!

Thanks, Cuz. Unfortunately, whatever relief we get these days is short term.

That would describe the finish quite well, Stefan. Thank you.

Wore this beautiful 1930s Black Stetson yesterday. For some reason, I wasn't wearing this hat that much even though cheap black fedoras was how I got into hats, and black is just the color I wear all the time - but then I decided to modify it slightly adding a little bandana and a feather and I love it now! The hat spoke to me.

Nice! Nothing wrong with black hats and good to make it work for you.

Out to meet a buddy for a four-way.

Calm down folks, I'm talking about chili.

Resistol Beaver Fifteen Kitten Finish. I have no idea what the beaver (or kitten) content is in this thing, but it has all the bells and whistles, including a Cavanagh edge and wind trolley.

For a four-way I'd say you'd need at least two kittens (but three would be better) and an equal number of beavers. Magnificent hat!

Great old Resistol Jim!

I don't think "Kitten Finish" has anything to do with fur content. From what I understand it was a process that took advantage of the properties of kitten saliva (you know how they like to rub their faces on things) to offset the interlocking tightness of the beaver felt by breaking down the outer layer just a bit to give it a softer hand. The use of kittens on fur-felt hat processing ended with the creation of P.E.T.A in 1980. This was also attempted on straw hats with little success...
