The winds swung around from the Southern Kona winds with heavy rain for the last week, back to the Northeast Trade winds and clearer weather. So, I broke my stay at home order for a walk along the coastal trail. I like the weight of this Quality Nutria because it doesn't blow off my head as easily as some other hats.

Having grown up in a town that bills itself as “The Maple Center Of The World,” I think what you see is frozen maple sap coming from a break caused during the winter.

Sap happens.

I thought the same thing, but the bark doesn't look like a maple to me - more like an oak. I confess I don't remember as much about trees in the northen tier as I used to know. I'd guess sweet gum at first glance, but they typically don't grow that far north.

Eric, any idea of what species of tree this is?

It’s crazy to think about how through the miracle of the internet and a postal service that those lucky hats were once bogged down in the South American swamp of the Okeefenokee are now liberated to the distant shores of Denmark.
And couldn’t imagine it possible that those felted crowns could ever come to rest on a better man’s head.
The Corolla bow looks smashing on one well dressed Dane!

I was wrong once before! Still not certain on this one, though. My thinking was it’s a relatively young maple.

Not sure. Is sent a pic of the tree and another close-up to a friend (Horticulturist). I thought it was a oak tree. Perhaps not. We shall see. The thawed icicle does not have a hint of sugar taste.

Here it is. My wife managed to get the photo with my iPhone! Guest appearance from my step-granddaughter.

I’m wearing a black Bailey Pork Pie. The reason you can’t see it is because my wife, after years of talking photos, decided today would be the day she forgot how to use a camera. Ten, fifteen times she got it to focus on me, but not once did she take a picture!

She’s wearing her fur felt Maxim.

I’ll get a picture of mine when I can.

a life of its own...
I sent the photo to a 4th generation logger up north, who was not 100% certain, but guessed ash or oak; but then said only maples have running sap. Sugar maple sap is generally clear, so his final guess was silver maple.
He also said if the sap tastes like tree bark, not semi-sweet water, it’s NOT a sugar maple.

I still think we could be barking up the wrong tree.

Can’t say why it’s puking sap but sure looks like white oak to me. Maple is possible but I say white oak. Keep us posted, love to know what’s up!

I'm thinking it may be a tree with internal rot that is collecting water inside somewhere higher up, then a recent thaw/freeze cycle might have allowed it to drain out of that branch hole and freeze again. If it is oak, that would explain the color of the water/sap, as oak is high in tannins that turn things brown.

Certainly not trying to sidetrack the thread, and I hope my thoughts are not taken by anyone as being argumentative as that is certainly not my intention. I'm just thinking out loud, and very curious about exactly what we're seeing. Thanks for bearing with me, and thanks to Eric for posting the picture!

Going out into the dead zone to raid Safeway for my in-laws. They are under draconian restrictions at their Bonaventure Retirement Center and only can have deliveries. So, I have donned my early 1950s Borsalino Featherweight fedora and will be their delivery boy. I need reasons to get out of the house to wear my hats. Patty is disturbed, but has not chained me to the couch yet.

Dog soirre this morning in a Stetson Bantam.

I took a walk out again to the curious tree icicle mid morning. It is an oak tree (black oak identified by the leaves under its canopy). The crevasse in the tree, created by an almost totally lost limb is filled with decay. I see under close examination that snow can easily collect, melt and creates icicles. It is a high probability that the colored ice is a leaching of the decayed matter into the melted snow cover.

On the hat front - my walk-about was done in a Filson Mackinaw and a Gannon Wanderer (inspired by the Stetson of said name and made of silvermist felt with charcoal trimmings).

That's a beauty of an old Borsalino. I have one of a similar vintage. The lightest felt ive ever encountered. Thin as tissue paper....which I wish you luck finding. Be safe out there and stay well.[/QUOTE]
