This is Quito, Ecuador. When the clouds roll in you think it's San Francisco fog.... but it's just clouds. Now that's pretty high up there....

I like the acento ecuatoriano. They speak Spanish almost the same way we do: perfectly.

My son speaks five languages. I was teasing him once about him learning only ugly languages.

Why don't you learn Italian? I chided.
-Oh, Dad, the only language you really like is Spanish with a Zona Esmeralda accent".
I had to blush, because he is correct.

Of course, it depends on the area you come from but some people in Ecuador have a pretty rough acento. My suegro/father-in-law was hard to understand. But my suegra and wife are easy to understand. Ramon was from Olmedo, Manabi', up near Manta and Montecristi. But it could also have something to do with being raised in rough areas of town, too, or the difference between blue collar and white collar/college educated persons as well. Lots of variables.

If I had to do it all over, I'd study Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. As it is, I studied German for 4 years and Polynesian languages Tongan and Niuean for 2 years. I recall Niuean the most because I lived on Niue Island for those 2 years. Of course, I studied Spanish for 2 years at the university, mi cunado es Domincano, I married a native speaker from Ecuador and then worked in an office covering the Spanish speaking caseload for 7 years. But my memory is now effectively shot, meaning fairly normal, or so I'm told. I used to remember everything.

My problem now is when my brain searches for a Spanish word, for example, it sometimes - in desperation or corrupted habit - grabs the first foreign language word that comes to mind. The problem rears its' ugly head when I speak Niuean to my wife.... ta hola fiha? I'll ask.... and get que, que, que???? Oh, sorry, I say.... que hora es? (what time is it?)

Hahahaha! The same thing happens to my son some times with Mandarin. He lived in Taiwan for two years, and had it in college for four. I swear I could never learn that language. Just a small, and to my ears, undistinguishable difference in tone means a totally different thing.
I went into Wikipedia to learn about Nuie. It only has 1600 inhabitants, with a coral reef almost all around it, and an area of 261 square kilometers. Must have been a paradise. Interesting life you've had, Doug! Scuba dive much?

There were around 4,000 people on the island when I lived there. They are all leaving for New Zealand. Life is hard there, to be sure, but it is a paradise IMO. You can see a whole lot just by snorkeling around the reef at low tide. When I was young and skinny, I could climb a coconut tree... not anymore!

Looking good D. Reminds me that I need to pull out my Golden Pheasant soon. Funny thing, my pheasant and both of my milan homburgs were sold by Stark and Legum. They must have had a heck of a 'burg salesman there.

I actually visited the shop about ten years ago and it is still there in Norfolk Va. today. During the late 80's through the early 00's, Biltmore was the big brand sold in many of the hat shops in Philadelphia and many other east coast cities all the way down through Virginia. Biltmore was known for their Milan, beaver finish and velour hats. Stark and Legum had a big mail-order business and was one of the few that catered to folks that wanted dress felt and straw hats, so they have a lot of Biltmore hats floating around out there.

I couldn't climb a coconut tree even when I was heavily into Tae Kwon Do, Doug. I'm from Acapulco, and I tried. [emoji5]

Hey folks!
Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl for Disney on a dreary afternoon. The one that got me started on velours. It is a very soft and pettable hat. :)

That finish looks like it is a joy to touch. I just like the lines of this style, crisp and clean.
