Giving the Sovereign another whirl. Did a cheater blocking on it to stretch the crown out to a fuller shape. (Cheater block=blocking on next size down because I'm too lazy to dismantle it and do it right.) It got the taper out nicely without making a sweatband bulge. Changed the braided band, which was glued to the velour instead of stitched (shame on you Stetson!) for a very simple grey grosgrain one.

Please pardon the psycho stare. I have to work on that.

Also, I picked up this tie in a thrift store. Evidently, that's a crest for a winery in Castella in Chanti, Italy. Any ideas @Daniele?
