A Memorable Memorial Day Weekend In Chicago, Finale

Terracotta ornamentation over our hotel window. Memorial Day morning.

On what will prove to be the warmest day of the year thus far, I donned my Optimo Milan once again.

The thermometer is already reading 83F, but the glorious terracotta facade of the Majestic is at last illuminated by brilliant sunshine.

We visited another of our favorite stomping grounds before heading back to Minnesota. The Museum Of Science & Industry, Hyde Park.

Originally built as the Palace Of Fine Arts for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, it was extensively restored in the late '20s to its current state, and is one of only two buildings to survive to the present day, the other being the World's Congress Auxiliary Building, now home to the Art Institute Of Chicago.

The grandeur of the museum's previous life as the Palace Of Fine Art in the storied White City is readily apparent, and with a little imagination one can almost see what the original stucco and plaster exterior, painted white, would have looked like.

Ju-87 and Spitfire adjacent to the great dome of the museum.

One of three pavilions of the original structure, and its magnificent dome.

The original Palace Of Fine Arts building, constructed ostensibly as a temporary structure with plaster and stucco, began to decay not long after the World's Exposition, and the exterior was replaced with its current limestone cladding during extensive renovations and conversion to a permanent museum in the 1920's.

Allegorical figures cover the exterior of one of the smaller pavilions.

Lydia has been reading the excellent book by Erik Larson, entitled The Devil In The White City, and so it was that we found ourselves admiring the museum's splendid exterior, while everyone else gladly sought refuge from the 93F heat inside.

We spent more time outside of the museum than within, but my Milan performed admirably and kept me relatively cool.

Magnificent limestone columns of the Ionic order. Designed by Charles B. Atwood, the building is executed in the Beaux Arts style, with a strong Grecian influence.

Unlike the other buildings of the White City, the original Palace Of Fine Arts was constructed with a brick substructure under its plaster facade, which made it a better candidate for preservation and restoration, and probably helped to protect it from the devastating fire that consumed the White City in 1894, just a year following the Fair.

We spent a tranquil afternoon sitting on a few benches under the canopy of shade trees, enjoying a gentle breeze, and studying the wealth of architectural details of the museum. We must have appeared somewhat odd to other museum guests, to be spending so much time gazing at the building exterior in the oppressive heat.

As the sun began its descent in the late afternoon, we decided it was time to bid farewell to this legacy of the White City, and begin our journey home.

The Chicago skyline from the interstate on our way back to Minnesota. As we remembered our servicemen and women on this Memorial Day weekend we also looked forward to an exciting Summer ahead!

Another great set of photos, Al, thanks for that "journey" to Chi-town for us.

+1. Another incredible set of photos. They just keep on getting better and better!! The Science and Industry is a wonderful Museum, I haven't been there in years though.
Here's a picture of the Museum of Science and Industry (Palace of Fine Arts) from The World's Columbian Exposition - Chicago, 1893. A good chunk of that area was covered by water at one time. It was incredibly beautiful.

Nice hats and daughter pics! Perry, I chose an Imperial today too... quite a few shots posted in this thread.

How to coordinate this deep green/blue color will require some thought.
