I have been trying to resist comment.
I hate to say it, but I think this is a cool hat.
It's non-standard western. It has a nice, tall crown.
And I like the loose shackle curl. The brim is, with the
curl, effectively narrow for a cowboy hat, so it is less
of a statement and more of an everyday hat.
Overall, there's a nice nod to old fashioned cowboy
hats there, in a smaller hat that one can wear any time.
Holds its form nicely over the years, too- is it decent felt?

Now I'll go back to being a vintage fedora snob.

Felty, there may be hope yet

R's hat is quite nice and it was nice that you could no longer resist. I am sure your comments were heart felt. Who knows, we may yet see you sporting such a lid.

I won't hate to say it, it is a great hat! I don't think it is non-standard western, but it probably is what I would call non-standard modern western. I have friends who are into cowboy action shooting in a big way and are into period costumes. They do an incredible amount of research into their clothing and hats. I was amazed at the different styles of hats from old pictures and advertisements that are available. I have seen that style of hat before in several old photos and was explained to me that it is more of a formal town hat or "goin' to church" hat in a particular part of central Kansas.

I also did not know just how regional wester hats were! What I am learning from these guys is incredible!

:eek:fftopic: I know, I know.... but I also learned from this friend that the Mesquite tree is not indigenous of Texas, but came up from Mexico in the cattle drives, the cattle "pooping" along the way and planting seeds. I was shown a map of old trails and how they over-layed with the mesquite trees growing in Texas today, fascinating!

Thanks Feltfan, I should say its great felt. This hat was a present from my grandmother right at 30 years ago.
It was custom made by Manny at Texas Hatters.
Here is the site.. TEXAS HATTERS.
And here is where the LONE STAR DUDE. can be found.
I remember when I ordered the hat it had two brim lengths, I ordered the shortest, now I wish it was the other.
But its a great hat and its very well made.

And, yeah, that's what you think it is - a Stanley Steamer. The guy in the leather jacket? Some fella named Jay.

Seen me lately? No need to worry!

PS - Just to add that so many people are being so kind to us out there on the line. Food, drinks, moral support - all available in abundance! And the cupcakes...humana-humana!

I'm still getting a kick out of Western week. Stetson 4X Beaver. (For all the photographers out there, I know this picture breaks the rule about having the action go into the picture, and toward the center. I did one like that, but this treatment seemed to work even better.)
