The Tonak is hard to photograph, but I love the way it creases (and feels) and it wears so comfortably.
I can't think of a better rut to be in Bob.In a Rand rut...
That is a great hat sir.The Tonak is hard to photograph, but I love the way it creases (and feels) and it wears so comfortably.
From what I have read, you are right on about the beaver heading east but that ended before the 20th c. My understanding was that the depletion of the critters led to a crash in the beaver fur trade in the latter half of the 19th c. Plus... a lot of European manufacturers had moved to silk.I thought I'd read it was the other way - we were sending fur (beaver) to Europe.

Neat. Great thing there is that I can keep some liver, too. There's hope for you yet. I may be in the market for a new liver some day.

Here is a nifty write-up on the Danbury industry (with great pics from inside the Hawes Vol Gal factory). It dates to the beginning of the 20th c.

The piece starts at page 646. The author notes that imported fur predominated in Danbury at the time. I also recall seeing figures and articles in "Hat Box" about Stetson's massive fur importations.
Interesting stuff to ponder...
Sure were. Dude in the Danbury piece writes this...OK, that rings a bell and makes sense. Were we importing hare then? If so, that answers some questions we've always had about beaver content of vintage felt.

If you’re gonna be in a rut that’s a pretty good one

I'm sure that the data are out there. I'll dig around.I guess I meant "predominantly" hare. Would be nice to find volumes of imports at that time.

I'm loving the brim profile on that. Now I'm tempted to dig out an upbrim hat too for today. Thanks for the inspiration!
Great choice, my friend!

A little later... 1912. From the American Hatter . Lots o' hare imported by this particular firm.I guess I meant "predominantly" hare. Would be nice to find volumes of imports at that time.

Thanks. It's very comfortable to wear, fits like a glove.Don't know much about westerns, but this one I certainly like the look of. Cool hat, Joao.
Looks great! Nice hatband! In a Rand rut...
Matt Deckard headwear.
Got this in during the beaver brand liquidation. I think it was one of their bodies. Fairly coarse/unrefined felt but not bad. I like the colors and dimensions and the wide sweatband.
