This 1961 Shudde Bros Open Road arrived on my noggin via Sue, who kindly flicked it my way when it turned out to be too big for her. It arrived with an LBJ cattlemen's crease and has since been given a tear drop and front pinches - in fact, not long after this shot was taken this morning I deepened the pinches and gave it a more generous swoop.

It's a seriously well made hat. I can see why old Mr Shudde was revered for his skills. And Sue - it fits me like it was made for me. (Though I'm still not quite sure the big, wide Texas look suits this Aussie scone).

You were made to wear a thin ribbon!
Looks perfect on you, well done!

Thanks RBH and Mario. I've another thin ribbon that I'll drag out soon - and a couple more wider brims I've yet to reveal.

I seem to recall Art Fawcett saying somewhere that Shudde Bros made and maintained Gene Autry's hats. I can still remember listening to Mr Autry's "Christmas Cracker" album as a kid. It was a Christmas tradition. I think it was this very album that popularised "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer". (It did, at least, contain his famous recording of the song as well as 'Here Come's Santa Claus' - which he wrote - and 'Frosty the Snowman').

I like to think Gene was wearing a Shudde Bros as he sang...

Guilty as charged, sir. No excuse.

But today's lid complies with the statute. :p

I think it looks terrific on you, E. T.! Generously sized noggins need generous brims, in my opinion. I love the crease.

For me today, a borderline-stingy Knox, in a front pinch porkpie crease, à la Popeye Doyle, but with front brim down. I rarely wear snap-brim hats with the brim turned up all around, even in casual dress - I do not feel like it works for me.

Torpedo -

That Knox works well for you. I agree that the brim up would project an inappropriately light-hearted attitude for your seriously elegant outfits.

It does not have a model designation anywhere on the hat, but it certainly sports the wide contrasting brim binding.

That's not uncommon Sue. My Gay Blade also has no model designation on the hat itself but I'm lucky enough to have the factory docket which clears up the ambiguity. So....my blade is out of the closet, so to speak.

I must post some pics of it soon.

Dinerman, I like that crease - it works well with your particular attire in the pic. Is looks very Montana-Peak-esque in that angle, although I see in the "inside" pic that it is not that. Can we see other angles?

Me and my mostest, favoritest Knox Westlite. When I choose a hat for the day I always want to pick this one but I have to keep the rest of the boys happy so I spread my choices around some. Sometimes I pick it up just to feel the felt, as it were.

Truly outstanding! I'd have a hard time putting it down, too!
