Richard--the place is popular with tourists from the UK due to the resemblance. It's most spectacular on a sunny day in the winter after the rains return and everything greens up. When it's clear the vistas are breathtaking.

Thanks Rusty, Justin, Blackthorn and randooch. I gave my brother a Parabuntal that fits him better than it fits me for him to take back to the heat in Texas. I showed him a few of my hats and I think he may get the bug. I might just steer him toward a Campdraft if he shows more interest. Rusty, I enjoyed seeing all the pics from the drinking buddies shot all the way through the hat making equipment.

mike--the pics I posted were all taken on the leeward side of the point where the wind wasn't bad. When we went to the windward side to the Point Reyes lighthouse I had to hook up the wind trolley. And yes, I would have suffered the greater loss if our hats had blown away.

geldoc--based on the folks I saw, you and I may have been the only ones who wore fedoras out there his weekend. Was it foggy when you went?

The curling machines are unreal, I have three of them, and a bucket full of curling heads of differant size curls, will have them sand blasted and polished there is one that is the biggest curl I have ever seen in that bucket.

Ribbon, and ribbon and ribbon, there are 100's of rolls of 4 line 6 line 9 line 12 line, and boxes full of 14, 16, 19 and 22 line ribbon, more 3 ply and 6 ply ribbon than I could ever get in all colors.

Hope to get piping for steam and blow down lines done in the next week or so and have the blocker cleaned and painted and in use by Sept 1st.

Hope to get the vintage air vent dies cleaned and installed on the machine to do those wonderful vent designs in the crowns and sides of some of the hats we make.

For those of you outside the U.S., you're probably unaware that Cleveland is often the butt end of a joke. Approximately 20 years ago, the river that flows through the city caught on fire. 25 years ago a B grade movie that depicted LA after the big earthquake was filmed in Cleveland. The director was asked why Cleveland. His reponse? Cleveland looks like LA after the Big One.

We've done a lot in the last 20 years to improve the city and the surroundings. But we remain one of the poorest cities in the country. No one wants to live in Cleveland - only in the suburbs.

And then we have the Metroparks - an oasis that encircles the city. You sometimes forget you live in Metropolitan Cleveland when in the Metroparks - at least for a little while.

My daughter has two more years of undergraduate study at one of our state schools. We're starting to look at places to move where ultimately we stay into retirement. The Southwest U.S. is looking good at this time.

Andy, my wife and I went to Ohio a couple of years ago to visit some relatives and just travel. We flew into Cleveland and I had gotten a hotel room at a Raddison downtown, just a stones throw from the baseball stadium and I was very surprised at how nice and clean the downtown area was. I was really a little intimidated at first but got comfortable quickly. We walked into downtown and looked around and visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The lake was beautiful and so was the weather. I would definitely like to go back and visit the Metroparks.

Today I'm wearing my recently converted Resistol 4X Cowboy hat. I haven't posted pics of this one yet. The label under the sweatband was written by hand, not computer. Based on the tall crown, liner style, and sweatband, I would say it dates to the late 70's.




The open crown was 6 1/4 inches high, but was very tapered and round. I blocked out the high cattlemens crease and used a flat topped block. I brought the crown down from 6 1/4 tapered to 6 inches squared which I prefer much better. I then used some old pearl ribbon that I took off another project hat that has seen some wear, but I liked it because it made the hat appear older than it is.

The brim edge that came from Resistol was horrible. They cut the brim and then packaged it. There wasn't rough edges, but there was an unevenness about the original cut. I sanded the edge using 100 grit, then 200 grit, then 400 grit. The edge is not only smooth, its perfectly round now. Finally I gave the crown a center crease with side dents for that 1920's look.

I wanted to make a clone of a 1920's western that I could wear all the time and not worry about destroying a Vintage western.
