Yeah, that's the one I put in an offer for at 2AM.

Bought yourself another hat that doesn't fit you? Congrats.

Jim, without inflection or non-verbals, I’m not sure how to take this. Are you upset that I buy hats that aren’t my size and flip them? I get being disappointed that you didn’t get a hat you wanted, but does it matter if it’s my size or not?

Forgive me if I’m reading more into your message than you intended.

May have gotten a bargain, may have gotten skunked. Ebay listing was for a grey Dobbs, size 7. Details said "woman's size 7" but photos were of two different hats, mostly of a grey fedora but a couple were of a black bowler. And a Dobbs box. Grey number is a 7 3/8 Kensington (logo on tip, sweat is only stamped with a defunct department store). A forum here lists Kensington as trademarked by Stetson in 1940. Further research says Kensington was the industrial neighborhood in Philly where John B Stetson had his first factory. I only found one other Kensington on here, and it was a lid made in Canada, but with a different tip logo than the hat in the ebay photos. Here's the kicker (maybe this belongs on the ebay thread): starting bid was $9.99 and the auction ended early this morning (St. Steven's Day -- Boxing Day in Canada). Someone took a nibble a few days ago, but didn't crash my limit so I picked it up for less than twelve bucks. But... what have I bought? Stay tuned to the New Hats thread for the answer. Pics are of what I am hoping to receive.

It's frustrating for a hobbiest to compete with a wholesaler.

I'm tired of this thread and New Hats being the "What hats are Brent and Bob going to flip tomorrow?" It's much more satisfying to see a Member get a new hat they're excited about and want to wear. I see you post a hat and think, "Oh, boy. That's gonna get jacked up and listed on eBay tomorrow."

I'm tired of losing hats to greedy merchants; I'd rather lose to someone who will actually wear and enjoy the hats.

You should be made to list yourself as a vendor at this point.

And I DGAF how you take it.

I wrote a long retort, including some pithy turns of phrase, but I decided to let your own words stand.

Probably didn’t get the whittle pwesents him wanted this year, so the lil tyke is taking it out on others who are bigger intellectuals and better thinkers than he could ever hope to be. Which includes Ayn Rand—most DEFINITELY.

I'd enjoy reading the pithy retort, but I'm the kind of @ss that pours oil on troubled waters just to toss a lighted match.

I don’t think we need any fanning of the flames. I generally like Jim’s posts, and he’s been the beneficiary of some of my “wholesale” hat buying of sizes not my own. I don’t know where this is coming from. I’m definitely not part of the virtue of selfishness crowd, but I’m not any kind of socialist either.

The flames got fanned when jimbob reached a new low and brought up politics for absolutely no reason. Maybe the guy needs to go on vacation, or something.
Maybe settle down and read a good book.
May I recommend, Atlas Shrugged?
Author, Ayn Rand is of superior intellect, policy and philosophy who’s penned several great books that I’ve enjoyed reading.
He brought her up to hurt Brent’s political stance and throw out bait for anyone else who might join in. Don’t start nuthin, won’t be nuthin, otherwise, I’m your huckleberry.
jimmy’s recent behavior and attitude is uncalled for, though, I am not one to add most flip hats I buy to the two threads mentioned—for this reason and others.
If I have posted a flipper there was good reason.
And I’m pretty sure Brent or Bob has no evil plot behind doing so. Two good guys, as I, or most anyone here on the Lounge can attest.

Do you really like Ayn Rand? I liked reading her novels in high school, but her absence of acknowledgment of any power higher than man hasn’t aged well with me as my own spirituality has evolved. Hard to cheer a protagonist who is a rapist. I see her work as the complete rejection of communism and group-thinking she lived through, but the lack of real morality makes it all feel dark and dystopian to me. I do think there are some nuggets worth mining, and I know she was/is the darling of some on the right, but her novels and her philosophy go where I’m not comfortable following. I did get a couple hundred dollar scholarship in high school for an essay I wrote on The Fountainhead…I’m sure it was wisely spent. :)

I, like anybody of free thought, don’t agree with everything anyone says or believes. She wrote good stories with awesome plots that uphold Capitalism; which is the reason jimmy brought up that book.
I’m merely defending what deserves defending when provoked—by hot headed cry babies.

Let's make this a poli-lit thread! I recommend Number One by John Dos Passos. A much more readable and fun fictionalization of Louisiana Governor and Senator Huey "The Kingfish" Long's controversial career than the more famous All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren (although the movie had some great hats -- or is that a different thread?).

And I appreciate that, Randall. This storm in a teacup came about unexpectedly.
