My comment would be that some people suck. ;) haha

But I guess it's up to the rest of us non-sucky ones to not play their game?

Yep, people really do suck. That's why as adults we have fewer and better friends to rely upon.
I try to be better than what I see "out there" but it's depressing at times for sure. For me, the lack of manners is the big one. I don't care how people dress (sans the pants below my ass thing) and look etc. Living here is kinda fun really. You can be anything you want and have a community to be part of. We went to a friends tattoo parlor in Hollywood last night for their Xmas "Toys for Tots" party. Everyone was super incredibly awesome and friendly and generous. But I'd wager that 99.5% of the people who see some of these tattooed greasers and bikers, etc would think they were all thugs. That's a shame - and I was guilty of that some years back. Thanks to my kids, I've learned to really look outside the box of my own upbringing to see those as different as really just different-looking. I'm just glad I got enlightened before I left this messy 5 billion year old experiment of a planet :)

Watched "Miracle on 34th Street" last night. Thought this quote from the character of Alfred was oddly appropriate:

"Yeah, there's a lot of bad 'isms' floating around this world, but one of the worst is commercialism. Make a buck, make a buck."

"The only difference between tattooed people and not-tattooed people is, tattooed people don't care if you're not tattooed."

I've heard that before. Might be something to it. ;)

While I have no need of tattoos myself -- I've got enough scars on my arms as it is -- I'd much rather associate with someone with tattoos who lives a quiet, simple, nonconsumerist life than with someone without tattoos who'd trample old ladies and children into the ground to get at a new iPhone.

well, I'm seeing some folks being bitter and cynical( read that, depressed) during this Holiday season( btw, does this happen every year about this time or every holiday?) and have chosen to pick on consumerism, but is that the real reason? I think not. If we're going to rail against bad people, then why not child molesters and murderers, etc? Not to mention, are we so pure that we can judge other folks?

I've said before, afa the economy, consumerism is the best thing for it, as it provides jobs for alot of folks( alot more in the USA, if folks bought more stuff made in the USA). Do we not want folks to have jobs? Consumer spending stimulates the stock market and encourages world trade, which strengthens ties with world allies and provides a brisk trade and jobs all around and general stimulation. Who doesn't want that?

What kind of world would we have if everyone only bought necessities? Who would want that kind of world? No one could ever buy a gift for anyone else? Who here would dictate the gift or how much one can spend or what they can buy? How sad. Baah, humbug!

Nope, the only thing I'd ask is that everyone shop and shop, but please, buy American. Now there's something to complain about.

This year I made an 8x10 print from an old family negative for my mother -- the only color photo we have of her parents. It didn't cost me anything but a little bit of time, and it'll mean more to her than anything I could have bought at a store. That's the kind of gift that Christmas ought to be about -- something from the heart, not something that'll be in the scrap pile by the time the next Christmas rolls around.

You don't even have to give a physical gift for it to matter. Time spent visiting a friend you haven't seen in years is worth far more than some random thing you found on Amazon or at the mall. Time spent visiting someone who lives alone and doesn't get much company, time spent helping someone who needs a hand with household tasks. Those are gifts you can give without spending a nickel, and you can give them any time of the year without waiting for Door Busting Values and Red Light Savings.

So, no thanks, I won't be spending much money this December. And I think my corner of the world will actually be a little better because of it.

You could also have "Mom" tattooed on your forearm. I think both convey the proper sentiment.
