What do you do for Living?

I'm a H.S.Art Teacher.
I teach Ceramics,Contemporary Crafts, and Basic Art I.
One more week till I have to be a responsible adult again

Other "real" jobs I've had:
Textile designer for 7 years. Fun! I designed fabric for the furniture market.

Designer for an Architect Firm. Did that for two years. I didn't enjoy the architects I worked with. Lets just say egos. Lots of down time too.

Who knows what I'll do next??

Hey, be nice! I was an architecture student once, and I still fire up the CAD system every now and then to keep in practice at design work... (and while I definitely have an ego, I always do my best to make my appreciation for those who assist on my projects known.)

Now wait!!lol I mean the architects I worked with at this specific firm not all architects in general! Any field can have people with overinflated egos and they are never much fun to work with.

The owner of this firm was such a control freak at night after I would leave he would rearrange everything on my desk and put things where he thought they should go. I would come in the next morning and wouldn't be able to find anything. So, I would put everything back the way I liked it. I mean after all it was my work space!:rage: The next morning everything in my work space would be put back the way he thought it should go! It was a vicious cycle! I don't know if he had OCD or what? Eventually I just gave in and let him have my work space. I would however still go around the office and move things on purpose just to mess with him! lol That was kinda fun

Umm, yeah, that is bad. I hope you wore gloves... wouldn't do to leave any of those nasty fingerprints or other evidence of who did the deed, now would it?

At 42 I have become an accountant. At 38 I finally went to college. Been at it for 4 years and probably got 2 more. My company just moved me from a claims adjuster to an accounting assistant.

The people I work with think I'm nuts but so far I am excited about accounting.

I'm new in town-

I worked as a makeup artist for film and print for several years, while in college and then afterwards- I specialized in vintage looks.then I ventured into fashion styling and "image consultation"- somehow I managed to carve out a niche' for myself doing personal shopping for vain wealthy celebutantes and naughty bad boy actors (who want to wear, say a vintage bowler, but don't know where to get it or a starlet who wants a flapper dress- but doesn't have the time to find it) I also fill very weird requests for other stylists- say "Can you find a 1930's Schiaparelli gown in MINT green size 6 in 4 days?"- why -yes, yes I can.
I have loaned clothing and expertise to TBS's "what not to wear", the BBC, MTV, and VH1- usually to musicians or actors that want to wear "vintage".
I loan out tons of vintage clothing for the Grammys,Emmy's, MTV awards, ect. (nice to make cash, and then get my treasures back!)

I have a line of fantastic women's vintage-esque shoes coming out (interpretations of my favorite styles from the victorian, 20s, 30s, 40s) this is my baby and I'm bankrupted myself to produce the most amazing "repros" every seen. (they don't look like repros!- I even custom molded the buckles and clasps- in Italy and worked with designers who previously did shoes for Manolo Blahnik and Marc Jacobs)

I also own a period textile company that in process of reproducing authentic weight COLD RAYONS in France- the only place where I've found the looms and the artisans to do it correctly), dimity cottons, chambrays-ect that haven't been seen since the 30s-40s- this is another hugely expensive project and I'm not sure if anyone- except perhaps my fellow Fedora Loungers- will care- or buy - ha-
This will be primarily a resource for the film industry (period movies)- and ambitious vintage sewing enthusiasts.

fftopic: I'm curious to hear from vintage sewing enthusiasts and other textile collector's to hear of your "fantasy" fabrics (or prints) you'd love to see.

I basically somehow managed to make some of my more "weird" hobbies
(collecting shoes- collecting rayon) into jobs. I love to meet others like me- since as we all know, doing this is a challenge and sometimes can really be maddening.
(I throw Scarlett O'Hara style fits- almost every day!)

It's interesting how many different careers some have gone through to find the one they're in now. In my case its been several and I suspect I'm not done yet. Mine include:

Photographer- some sports, but mainly related to the music industry in Nashville, concerts, album covers and such.

Teacher and coach- Political philosophy and lacrosse respectively

Cargo Pilot- DC3's, also mail (MU-2's) and several NASCAR drivers among others.

Aircraft archaelogist- if you don't know what that is, essentially it is someone who searches the world over for downed aircraft, mainly military warbirds and goes to dig 'em up out of rivers, lakes, off mountainsides etc. In our case we brought them back to the states to fly. The up side is the thrill of the research and finding the stuff before someone else does, and yes there is a lot of competition racing to find what is left. Also the incredible experience of rebuilding the aircraft, some hunters egads, sell it to museums to hang in a building. No way, rebuild it and fly it. That is the best part, seeing those birds airborne again, and getting to fly 'em.

The down side is that you make little money and have a lot of time away from home. But if you are single or married with no children it is a lot of fun.

Writer- mainly as a ghost writer of books and speeches or sections of books, mainly on political or policy topics. If you are a voracious political reader, you have read some of it no doubt. I never considered it my living so much as part of my living as a political professional.

Spent many years as a graphic designer and absolutely hated it. Oh well. That's an art degree down the drain. :eusa_doh: Now I'm a cook at a local casino. Perhaps I'll start painting and showing in galleries again.

Is this a job, or a dream?

Well, I've been lurking around the forum since I found it about a month ago, must say that I love the little community of folks here. I miss the bygone days of my father and grandfather. I seem to have lucked out profession wise, my dad was a firefighter in motown close to 30 years before he retired, and when I finished putting myself through college I fell into a niche. Sometimes I do pinch myself when I'm working. I'll just come out and say it. I'm a licensed private detective currently living in the southeast US.
