What Do They All Think Of Your Vintage?

My very STBX hated my vintagey clothing. She hated my hats. She hated that I'd wear collared shirts when everyone else was in T's. She hated that I'd tuck my collared shirt in when all the other men wore them untucked. She hated that I loved wearing waistcoats and ties. And jackets. And wingtips when the other guys were in sneakers.

But no worries now. She is my STBX.
She didn't know what she had! I can't find a guy who shares my worldview, much less likes vintage. I HATE jeans, athletic shoes, and Packer gear. No imagination whatsoever.

That is so right. But there is also a group of people who insist on wearing very strange, but let's be kind and call them anachronistic items - top hats, pince nez, spats - to a local steakhouse for a friend's birthday and they wonder why people are looking at them funny. For me there is a difference between enjoying vintage and wearing a funny looking costume. Where people draw the line on this will vary and it is also situation dependent.

That can get pretty creepy. There is a small town in northeast Oklahoma where the local undertaker wears a tuxedo and a top hat and spats, and he does his face with the same makeup he puts on corpses for burial.

But what if you like wearing suits and ties. Fashion changes all the time. For example: from the early 60s suits to jeans in the 70s. No matter what happens, I'm not gonna fit in with a certain sub culture.

Besides following popular culture is too expensive =P.

AAP I don't think anyone here really cares what others wear but it's to be expected that some sartorial choices will create reactions. Wearing a suit and tie is not a particularly brave or outlandish choice and is unlikely to be noticed. But if a person dresses in order to set themselves apart form others as superior and also behaves with entitlement - then that person may get some not very flattering feedback.

I don't think most anyone has any idea that I'm wearing something vintage, unless I tell them.

Also, most of my vintage clothing and footwear is casual. So, for example, I'll mix a 40s jacket in with 60s shirt and a 70s pair of Levi's with a modern leather belt (or canvas US Army 1940 open-buckle belt) and a repro pair of 40 or 50s (or vintage 60s) boots. Or, any combination of that.

Can vintage be a state of mind rather than strictly dress? Say there are two tables-one with twenty-somethings and one with eighty-somethings. I know which one I'll opt to sit at. :)

I may be wearing jeans and look better suited to blend in with the twenty-something table, but I think a lot of vintage love rests in the mind rather than what is seen at eye level. All I know is "I'll Go Crazy" like James Brown whenever I find myself in a vintage store-be it jackets, shirts, old advertisements. It's home.

I think it may well be a state of mind too Nick. Including what one likes artistically and one's ethical behaviour. I like old fashioned manners - that's a vintage expression too these days.

I see a lot of Designs and materials in clothes that deliberately try to reflect the feel and look of older vintage original Pieces, NO one bats an eye In the shopping malls.

Always been the case. That's how fashion works. Whenever I have gone shopping over 40 years there have always been designs that were borrowed from much earlier times.

People think I'm a rich snob =(. I don't understand I buy most of my clothes from thrift stores and spend responsibly yet people judge me harshly.)
Tell you what Adrian. Stand beside your classic car, wearing a zoot suit, accompanied by a fedora hat and blue & white correspondence shoes and you will get a reaction. Some positive, some negative and some absolutely comic.

Bar one suit, I have nothing that will suit correspondent shoes.
Heresy!
But you do have some fine leathers. And correspondents can enhance a leather, but of course, you have to like them. Ain't no rules that dictate whom should wear what, but calling someone a heretic, especially someone so well versed in all aspects of the era, is a delicious tease.
