Spitfire,

Gun collectors think of guns the same as stamp collectors think of stamps or coin collectors think of coins. They are objects of interest and history and in many cases are beautiful (and beautifully designed) machines.

No one sees anything wrong with a stamp collector having thousands of stamps, a coin collector hundreds of coins or a retired model train enthusiest parking outside because his entire garage is now a big train diorama. [huh]

Guns are inanimate objects and have no inherent moral value, the same as any other inanimate object. So having one or a hundred has no more "meaning" than having one or a hundred Hummel figurines.

Except that guns, unlike coins or stamps or trains or Hummel figurines, also tend to hold their value better across the board, investment wise, and can actually be used for recreation as well.

Man, I gotta catch up! I'm only at about 20 or 30!

Oktagon, glad to see you here and glad to see that you realize rights are not "granted" by governments, but rather they are either recognized or denied!;)

I doubt Oktagon's have killed anyone, and a guy who'd shoot you for no reason would bash you with a model train just as quickly. They'd find him though, that kind of criminal always leaves tracks behind. :D

Of course, they weren't as proportionately inexpensive in the early days (mass production is a wonderful thing) so collecting wasn't as available a hobby or as common for folks without disposable income or a job that was somehow related.

Most folks then, as the posts show, just had the tools they needed for the purposes they used them for. (which I guess is still the case today) Being inherently durable the better ones became family heirlooms and are as useful, and useable, today as they were back then. And cheaper than classic cars. :)

I love seeing the pictures and hearing the stories around heirlooms or classics like that, just like the hats, suits and cars.

First off, you should have said "killed WITH a stamp" or "killed WITH a coin". Besides, plenty of children have choked to death on coins!!!

I haven't killed anyone yet (neither have any of my guns)...apparently I'm doing something wrong....[huh]

The family tradition was when we all got together at Thanksgiving or Christmas that we all went outside and shot pistols.

My mother told me that when she was younger, the common tradition was to go out and shoot off guns in the air in lieu of fireworks on the 4th of July, and even on Christmas.

I don't think you understand that people here are talking about. I am sorry to see that, but hopefully some day you will.

I never argue with people who carry guns - espcially if they have as many as you.

Don't worry, when you have this many, you spend so much time choosing just the right one that the target can just stroll away unharmed. :D

That wasn't an english correction per se, he was just pointing out that you can't be harmed by an inanimate object on its own. Objects don't do anything to anything else, they just sit there inanimatedly. ;)

People harm people with things. It's a proper assignment of responsibility, to the actor, not the object.

It's not the car, it's the drunk driver - it's not the casino, it's the gambling addict - that sort of thing. An important distinction.

Matt, I did not think of it as sarcasm either. What I should have said was this: Thanks I get the point, and I think my point went through too. Right or wrong english. But then I thought, I might sound too harsh. But well...what the heck...now I said it. Cheers friend!

No worries.

It's only polite folks who are concerned about unintentionally offending others, so I think we both have proven ourselves on that score. :D

Interesting story from the 1930's ...

My dad told me an interesting story last night that took place when he was about 8 or 10 years old (would have been about 1932 to 1934).

My grandfather died in 1932, and my grandmother was left alone with my dad and my aunt (who would have been in her late 20's at the time). They lived in a rural setting, but near the railroad where vagrants often were seen. Late one night they thought they heard someone prowling about outside the house. Fearing someone was out to steal her chickens, my grandmother took my grandfather's old single barrel shotgun and proceeded to walk around the outside of the house clicking the trigger and saying, "I'll shoot you if you don't get out of here."

The gun wasn't loaded (she probably didn't even have any shells), but my grandmother was determined that no one was going to get her chickens. Now that's spunk!

I'm gonna steal a story from someone else and post it here!

This guy was a child in the '50's and his father ran a large store. One night, his father saw someone in the store after it was closed, and the police were called. The father, son (safely out of the way), and the policeman went to the store. The policeman got his shotgun out of his car and purposefully waited until they opened the door and he stepped inside to rack the slide of the big pump 12 ga. Schlack-Klak! Talk about dramatic effect! The sound echoed all around the empty store. The burglar was gone by the time they got there, but the guy remembers that that shotgun slide was the scariest sound he had ever heard in his life!
