Today I enjoyed a Rocky Patel R4 torpedo after some yard work, yesterday was a 5 Vegas torpedo, Friday was a La Aurora 1492 robusto, and Thursday was a Romeo Y Julietta bully. And they were all very good...

So you bought some from a collector? I'm assuming you are saying you got some pre-embargo Party's and not a cigar called a pre-embargo?

Warbird - Yes. We purchased two boxes + (one full box, and two partially filled boxes) of pre-embargo Cubans, both from the 1950's that would have been found in the clubs and casinos of Havana. While they drew well and had a pleasant but relatively mild flavor I'm not certain I would plunk down that much money again for personal consumption. We might do it again with some 1930s smokes if they are still available for our next Jazz Age period event - but I'll also need to solicit some extra contributions from our members...

Yeah, I have found disappointment with the few pre-embargoes I have tried. The problem is that no matter how well stored a cigar is it starts to lose oils after 15-20 years. I have never had one that was anything but just OK.

It's still an intersting experience to know that these were exaclty the same cigars someone would have smoked at the gaming tables and lounges in 1950's Havana. And, it's proving to be a huge draw for our event.

do you like La Aurora generally? I have not tried that brand yet.

Tonight at work I had a CAO Gold to start the shift and a CAO Brazilia box pressed during shift. It seemed like the Brazilia did not want to stay lit.

The La Aurora Preferido is supposed to be real nice but $$. I used to smoke the Aurora Belicos pretty regularly. A bowl of Presbyterian Mixture in a Peronelli again. Then a house english in a Grabow Big pipe. :eusa_clap

do you like La Aurora generally? I have not tried that brand yet.

Yep, I like most of those I have tried from their 'stable' - the ones I smoke are middle of the road (price wise and taste wise) and satisfying.

I like La Aurora as well, their regular La Aurora line is a good cigar, Cameroon wrapper, at a decent price. Their Leon Jimenes is s similar blend but with a Connecticut shade wrapper, very good for new smokers and guys who like mild cigars.

La Aurora Preferidos are simply magnificent. They're, on the whole, too rich for my blood, but I've been given a few over the years. And they are so wonderful, very smooth, not overly strong, and nearly flawless construction. That Perfecto shape will also hold on to that ash almost down to the band.

This weekend, had a Juan Lopez tres petit corona on Saturday night, and a Drew Estates Liga Privada #9 yesterday, both are winners.

I am going to rush home and break open my new box of Partagas 8.9.8.
I have also been hearing good things about Alec Bradley's new A size cigar---The Ego. At $5 a cigar and a whopping 9" long x 50 ring size, sounds like a good deal. $90 for a box of 20? Sounds good to me.

Not a bad deal. That part of the MAXX line? Those are getting a bit of buzz. The Medalist and Havana lines by Alec Bradley are also purt' good.

Keep a few of those Partagas and bury them deep in the humidor for a few years from now. They should be sublime.

It is indeed part of the Maxx line. I need to get my hands on some before they get sold out. I see a trend coming. :eusa_doh:
I'll think about keeping a few of the 8.9.8s. I actually didn't get to smoke one last night. I just finished the other half of a JR cabinet series instead. Probably not the same but......
I do have to say the 8.9.8s do come in a nice cedar box---errr humidor as per the invoice.
