You probably have an escape with CAO event coming near you and don't even know it!lol
If you go to their website and signup for the newsletter thats how I got the license plate. They contact the newsletter recipients.:D

I got a CigarsInternational catalog in the:D mail and they have "bundles" of 25 Flor De Oliva for 29, thats 10 bucks cheaper than I have seen anywhere.:D
They also have La Aurora seconds, I may take a chance on those later but I have not tried that brand yet.

If the RC was fresh, then it might have still been in what old Nee called the sick period. I doubt you would have gotten it at that stage though. The fairly strong ammonia smell would have alerted you to it right away. That goes away after a few months anyway and a trade and arrival tends to take longer than that. ;)
You certainly cannot discount age though. cigars generate great flavors and aromas just by sitting due to continued fermentation of the tobacco. The bitterness and taste of rough nicotine tend to mellow. The PSD4 would certainly benefit from careful aging in a good environment. It would be spectacular, in my opinion, after about three years.
The bolivars tend to be strong. You just can't get away from it. :p Just one of the reasons I like them. ;)
What didn't you like about the San Cristobals? Maybe aging would help?[huh]

I've had cigars in their sick period before (and was smart enough not to smoke them, thank God), and know what that smell is. The RC was definitely not sick; I guess it was just not my style. Bolivars are a funny cigar for me: I love the PC (enough to have more than one cab of them in my cooler ;) ), the BBF was almost as good, but I didn't like the RC or any of the BGMs I've smoked. But you never know if you don't try, right? I'm certainly not going to stop trying new cigars.

The San Cristobals seem pretty one-dimensional to me. Just a sort of earthy, leathery flavor that never changes or evolves. I tend to like a cigar with more, the only word I can really think of is "lively," flavors, something with some zing - spice, citrus, grass/hay/floral, and the San Cristobals don't seem to develop that, at least to me. It's like they have a good base flavor, but nothing on top of that to make it interesting.

Last night I sat on the deck at my parents' house and smoked an Upmann Mag 46 before a delicious Mothers' Day dinner of salad with fresh dandelion greens, grilled steak (porterhouse for me, NY strips for the rest of the family), and steamed asparagus we cut earlier in the afternoon. Now that's the way to spend an evening!

I have never smoked a regular LA, but my understanding is that they are very, very mild. I was lucky enough to have smoked one La Aurora Cien Años Belicoso, and it was absolutely one of the best cigars I have ever tasted. It's too bad they're so expensive. :( I have a really hard time justifying buying $15.00 cigars when there are so many great smokes for $4-8.

I figured I was talking to someone who knew what a sick period was. :D Yes, you never know until you try a few hundred cigars froma few hundred companies. ;) :p
The San Cristobals sound like my Nubb Connecticut experience.;)
That Upmann was perfectly paired with what you had for dinner. Good choice. All you needed was a good red wine or whisky to round it out with. :D

Yes indeed, there are many surprisingly good cigars for $4-8. It really surprises me. In the 90s, that was not so much the case but the industry has really evolved to put out even better stuff. There was some exception stuff in the 90s and people like Fuente put out decent cigars but they were not exactly the cheapest thing on the market. ;) Price didn't mean anything either in the boom time as people were paying anything for anything. Its no wonder there are about 100 less cigar companies than there were back then. :eusa_doh:

Check my zip code then 94577. I don't see any around here. Too many anti-smoking nuts around here. :eusa_doh:
That Flor may be a deal but try it and let me know. If it stinks then it won't cost me anything. ;) :p

I already know I like the Flors!:D
The only event they show in California is in Loomis. http://www.caocigars.com/
They do show Lasalle cigars and Piedmont Tobacconist as CAO retailers though.

There is also a Fuente ad in Cigar Afficionado that is advertising a new cigar, just pay 2.50 shipping.

This morning I had a Cusano M1 Churchill, a very nice Dominican smoke. Easy draw, creamy and sweet, lots of mild smoke, consistent to the end. This has become my "go to" smoke for the past month or so, replacing the Macanudo Maduro Baron de Rothschild.

Don't I know it. I'm cutting back on my drinking, though. For a while there, I was having 2-3 drinks every night, and it was taking its toll on my weight. I really hate getting up early to do cardio, so I'm trying to go back to a (nearly) clean diet and only doing cardio three days a week, right after I lift.

Edit: I forgot to include what I smoked last night: a Gurkha legend anniversario, which is a perfecto (i.e. narrow at the foot, fat in the middle, narrow again at the head - looks like a thin football). It was OK, but, like pretty much every Gurkha I've ever had, not worth what they try to tell you it is. (Just check cbid to see what people are actually willing to pay for Gurkhas; it's not even close to what the retailers try to charge). Fairly weak, airy maduro flavors of coffee with cream and sugar, maybe a hint of bitter chocolate. Kind of like a Padron maddie lite. It got very hot as the burn got to the point that the cigar tapers down again near the head. This was given to me as a gift, so I enjoyed the thought behind it, but I would definitely not buy it for myself.

Yeah, I try to stay away from the booze during week days. I have a glass of cheap Gnarly Head Merlot with dinner once in a while though. :D
Gurkha is indeed one of the most overrated brands I have ever known. Nice to see the perfecto shape being brought back from the brink though. At the beginning of cigardom, the perfecto was the most common shape. [huh]
You certainly can't argue with a free cigar though. :D ;)
Did I mention that I want to find a place that might sell me a Puros Indio Chief size cigar? :D

Hey guys.

The Dea is from a shop called MD Cigars (www.mdcigar.com) in Yuma Arizona. It's a medium strength cigar, that's not too harsh. Mike, the owner, has been a forum mate since I joined the cigar board in 2001.

Last night's smoke was a brand new cigar called Devil's Weed from Molina Cigar Company (www.molinacigar.com) Luis Molina used to work in the closest shop to my my home, and he's gone out on the limb with his own company and cigar. He's been to my home for events that last two years. It's a very mild cigar, but it's got lots of flavor, I like to say it's "substantial." But it's not overpowering at all, and the finish isn't overbearing, either. I almost couldn't tell I'd had a cigar afterwards. This is a really good cigar.

I'm just finishing a Montecristo Especial No. 1 Lonsdale, also known as a Montecristo White. A very smooth Dominican, very similar to yesterday's Cusano, and if anything even milder but more complex. It's finishing with a nice kick but with no bitterness. This would be a perfect cigar for a beginner, although I would suggest a smaller cigar such as the Rothschilde or the Especial No. 3.

That website address goes nowhere. Try mdcigars.com. ;) I couldn't find the Dea on their site--at least in the boxes section. It in the singles section even though they are sold in bundles. :p
The Devil's Weed Queen Bess looks like a good churchill size. No prices though. [huh]

Haven't had a chance to smoke a pipe today as I have been somewhat busy. However, I am planning to smoke a bowl of tobacco in my Peterson System pipe. The hallmark indicates that it was made in either 1930 or 31. The few time I have smoked it, it was great.

Would the Monte white be about the same as the Platinum? I like the Platinum but have not tried the white.

RudyN got a pic of that pipe?

Last night I had a Punch Gran Puro. Getting low on cigars:( and found it in the bottom of the humi where it has been for a couple of months under my small horde of Sosa's. I don't know if it was good as a Punch or if it sucked up some of the goodness of my Sosa's...lol
