One of my absolute favorites "I'm a good ol' boy, you know my mama loves me, but she don't understand they keep a-showin' my hands and not my face on TV.

Dukes of Hazzard ( I know, but it's Waylon for pete's sake)

Not the typical intro, but I always love the cheesy cartoon donkey, and they'd introduce all the cast, then Roy and Buck come out with the whole 'Hee Haw Gang'.

My picks

Veronica Mars:

In case you aren't familiar with it, don't write this show off as the dumb teenage crap it might look like at first glance. It was actually an incredibly well written modern film noir detective story about a girl who works for her PI father. It ran for three seasons, had a major mystery arc in each season with an individual mystery every episode, and a cast of characters which really changed and developed with the events. And it was really damn hard to solve those mysteries, no kidding. It wasn't like Scooby Doo or something where you see a guy in the first minute and say "Yeah it was the Carnival owner" - the episodes had characters working in collusion, hidden angles and unexpected new evidence, and all organic to the town and to reality, not some forced twist.

There was also a really great noir premise to the whole show - the father used to be the town's sheriff but was run out of office for persuing the wrong guy, his wife left him and his daughter Veronica gets raped at a party but keeps it to herself; their whole family life is destroyed. The show is also littered with film noir and hard boiled detective references, which is a nice bonus.

The reason I love the theme music so much is that I think it's a great modernization of the film noir concept, and also a perfect overview of the show - they manage to tell the entire story with merely the right melancholy mood and couple of lines of lyrics.

Firefly:

I think this qualifies as lounge-related. Sure it's a sci-fi, but it's a space western, and a damn good one at that. We're in the future, but also in the past, and with a story about freedom vs. government intrusion that's very relevant to the present.

I love the music because once again, it tells you the story of the entire show, and because "you can't take the sky from me" is probably one of the best lyrics ever written by a man.

21 Jump Street:

Shouldn't need any intro.

Some good ones! I remember UFO when it came out here in the US, but do you have a copy of the theme to post? And I've got to add the Beverly Hillbillies, My Favorite Martian, It's About Time, the Jetsons, and the Flintstones!

Streaks on the china never mattered before
Who cared?
When you dropkicked your jacket as you came through the door
no one glared
But sometimes things get turned around
And no one's spared
All hands, look out below
There's a change in the status quo
Gonna need all the help that we can get
According to our new arrival
Life is more than mere survival
We just might live the good life yet

Great website, thanks for posting it. Personally, i've always loved "The Rifleman" theme...one of my favourite shows when I was a kid! I found some old episodes on www.archive.org.

I just looked at this thread, and I was going to say Rifleman also. Great tune.

Also the theme from St. Elsewhere
