Alon, I think a beard makes you look much more interesting. Without a beard you look more clean-cut and maybe less mysterious. The beard definitely adds the artsy fartsy I'm-very-interested-in-old-stuff-and-history-look.

If it helps, cherry lips is mostly into 50's clothing and look (right cherry?) and I'm mostly into 30's. I study art history (that explains why I love artsy fartsy). I think you should make a poll!

And, in the un-bearded picture you are also dressed in 50's (I don't know men's clothes so correct me if I'm wrong!) clothes. In the picture with the beard you sport a fin de siècle-looking vest and glasses. So it also depends which look you are going for. No beard may be best for a golden era look.

LauraChase, thank you for those paintings. You're right, facial hair can be very artsy. It's amusing you bring up the French impressionists because just the other day I thought of buying a beret in the style of Rodin:

More so, you're right about the periods. I definitely prefer the earlier 20th century to the mid 40s and 50s, but it's very difficult for a guy to pull off that look without looking TOO retro-eccentric (I don't leave my house with a pocket watch and pince-nez) and as you mentioned facial hair doesn't suit the golden age of fedoras, most men of that period were clean shaven.

That's why I've started taking to caps (and now have an interest in berets) more than fedoras, but I still think they'd look better with a waxed goatee.

But since I've received so much positive feedback from a crowd whose opinion I value (since most people I know in real life don't value retrocentricity), I'll keep it on a little while longer. At the advice of someone from another forum, I'll trim the jaw/cheek part and that will make it look quite Edwardian (early 20th century)

It's interesting with beards, some think they add mystery, I think they hide a well-chiseled jaw line
To be fair I have a few friends with beards that really suit them, and I can't imagine them without. It's part of their personality.
