Yesterday I pieced together an outfit intended to complement, specifically, the style of hat I wanted to wear, namely a bowler.

I feel like a bowler is an style that needs a little more planification to pull it off, at least for me.

I think the ensemble evocates a different vintage vibe (more set-back, I would say) that suits such an admittedly old-fashioned kind of hat.

Here is the main panoply.

I rarely use hat feathers, but in this particular occassion I happened to have one with a set of colours harmonizing with the rest of the outfit (thanks to Gene for this little jewel of a feather ;); coincidentally, a couple of postings above he is also putting to advantage a feather, too, in an outfit of him), so I selected it as a finishing touch.

For everyday (i.e. working days) use I normally limit myself to cotton or linen pocket squares, and reserve the showier silk ones for other occassions, but this time I selected a soft-golden hued silk square that was subdued enough for my needs and complemented the rest. I chose to put it in a simple puff because of the same need for discretion.

Regards!

Thanks Lenore, Bugsy, and Jamie :)

Jamie, the moustache is a new thing, I'm still getting used to it. It needs to grow out a bit more I think before it will be more manageable, but if I don't wax it now I can't eat anything for it getting in the way.

You gentlemen all look very dapper indeed........methinks I should point the boyfriend in the direction of this thread. He might learn something ;)

Sproily: nice coat!!!

Back on topic, I went to a standup comedy night yesterday with some friends and this is what I wore:

navy blue, high waisted wool skirt
white blouse with a red and blue floral pattern
white wedges
pearl earrings and necklace
and of course, the obligatory red lipstick.

None of it actually vintage but vintage inspired. (Apologies for posting a day late - yesterday was rather hectic for me)

My U. Med School 35th anniversary reunion was last Saturday.
Three of the ten women in our class showed up in kimonos, so here I am, before heading out.

Hand drawn sumi-e, ink and wash painting landscape motif kimono with a boat moored by the river motif Nishjin-ori brocade obi.
Kimono and obi coordination is often chosen to present a theme. In this case, the common theme is the river, the landscape being mountain cliffs and river, with the riverside boat.

LaMedicine as always you look amazing. Your kimonos are always stunning. And I love the obi you had on. I have to say when I see you in your stunning Kimonos I wish 1. that I could actually fit in one (I am far to tall or that I am sure) 2. That I had a clue how to put one on and 3. that I wouldn't look absolutley ridiculous walking around in Virginia wearing a Kimono.

Nothing genuinely vintage, I'm afraid, but I think there was a certain mid-century feel to my outfit (or maybe I'm just deluded...) today, I had on a cabled, very fitted jumper that I made, with a dark brown skirt with godets and curled (ish - it never holds that well) hair and red lippy:

vintage or not it does look good on you!

@ GrantFan :)
1) How tall are you? I am 5' 5", relatively tall for a Japanese woman, and one of my daughters top me by a couple if inches lol The length of a woman's kimono is around her height. Do you see the fold right below the bottom line of the obi? That is extra length tucked in at the waist, to adjust the length and drape to fit the body. In other words, a certain length of kimono can be worn by women within a 5 inch range in height. Kimonos sewn to my specifications can be worn within a range of 5'2"-5'7"+, which coincides with the height of both my daughters. Kimonos sewn to my taller daugheter's specifics can be worn by someone up to 5'9"-5'10'. :D
2) I once ran across a site that explained how to put on a kimono in English, but I haven't kept the link. :( Tying the obi can be a chore, but there are obis that are cut and sewn apart as the belt around the waist and the *bow* on the back, which makes things easier :)
3) I think it would be fun. I once saw a TV documentary introducing a Japanese woman married to an American and living in VA, with a closetful of kimonos :) There also was someone --BettyValentine, I think her screen name is--in this Lounge (have't seen her around for a while) from NY who said she had some kimonos and knew how to wear them, and did so some times.

A most enviable suit, mike.

EDIT: actually, as the arms are an inch too long for you, I think you should sell me that suit.
