Starting off with Leo Reisman and his Orchestra in 1933 with Howard Phillips on the vocal for "Love Songs Of The Nile." If Cecil B. DeMille ever did arrangements for a dance band, they would sound exactly like this record.

Next up, following a commercial for St. Joseph's Aspirin -- just fifteen cents -- it's ahead to 1934 with Glen Gray and his Casa Loma Orchestra, with Pee Wee Hunt squinting and grinning his way thru "Lookie Lookie Here Comes Cookie." I hope she's brought the Benadryl.

For Valentine's Day, my hubby just sent me a 6 foot fox. Diesel, the Houston Dynamo mascot, just delivered me a chocolate covered strawberry bouquet. Above his head, he was holding an ipod stereo blaring Peter Gabriel.

This stuff is on. What are your recommended Bobby Valentin albums?

Let me think about it. The thing about "Latin Boogaloo" is that it was very faddish. Many established Latin bands in the late 60’s did them because they were so popular. They were competing with young bands (many of which couldn’t play very well), for the younger audience.

Latin Boogaloo (or Boogalu) was very hot and cold. Some of the tunes/arrangements were super hot, and some were just awful (really, really bad). I think I’ll do a post on super hot Latin Boogaloo cuts, maybe next week.

I’ll also get back to you about Bobby. Bobby started off as a trumpet man and then moved over to bass. Both of those cuts were off records where he played trumpet. The same record (Young Man With A Horn) that had Batman’s Bugaloo, also had a cover of Horace Silver’s “Song For My Father”. Unfortunately I think that the record/cd is currently out of print. I’ll have to look, see what’s currently available, and get back to you with recommendations.

Bobby’s late 60’s period (which included some Boogaloo) was preceded by straight-ahead Latin, and succeeded with Salsa. The common string that ran through his work was a strong jazz influence and excellence.

I’ll try to have a recommendation by the end of the day. Cheers

update:

“Young Man With A Horn” is still in print on vinyl (for DJ’s). It’s ironic that some of these albums are still in print on vinyl and not cd.

“Let's Turn On – Arrebatarnos” is also available on vinyl only. The original art work is way cooler too. My cd has the cheesy re-issue cover.

http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1266000032/ref=sr_gnr_fkmr1?ie=UTF8&node=&search-alias=aps&field-keywords=Let%27s%20Arrebatarnos

The track “Use It Before You Lose It” can also be found on this compilation:

Dance The Latin -- Swingin' Mambos, Soulful Salsa & Funky Rhythms From The Hip Latin Dancefloors Of New York City

Some of the tracks are cool; some are not so much. Again, I’ll post next week about cool Latin Boogaloo.

PS- Dusty Groove is awesome.

pps- More on Bobby Valentin.

Other great Bobby Valentin records include:

Ritmo Pa' Goza'/El Mensajero – His first record – lots of jazzy arrangements.

“Bad Breath” – Includes a great Latin Jazz cut “Zip Zap”.

The original artwork is much cooler.

Rey Del Bajo- One of his best. It’s officially recently out of print (though available for download), but you can find this cheap enough if you look.

In Motion- Great cover of Tito Puente’s “Siempre Junto A Ti” as well as the Count Basie classic “Shiny Stockings”. Same story as Rey Del Bajo-out of print but you can find it.

Musical Seduction – Worth it for the cover alone, but it also comes with out of sight music.

Verdi's Messa di Requiem. I know it is not quite in the era on which we focus, but I had to give it a shout out. It is on my mind, since I have a chorus gig in Budapest in May to sing it.

An undated cassette recording (circa 1990s) of a live performance by Richard Halpern and Cheryl Chase (of Mike Henebry's Crazy Rhythm Hot Society Orchestra) on the old Don't Wake Me Up, Let Me Dream radio show that was hosted by Joe Monte on Pasadena station KPCC back then.

Rude Once Too Often
"Going through rather a "Heavy" ball point Penguin thing at the moment
Have a laugh with the Ballpoint Penguins, three fine voices doing original and popular comic songs with verve and wry style in and around Perth, Western Australia. Their original songs tackle life's really important questions: The battle of the sexes, the quest for self-actualisation, and what a woman really wants from a trip to the beauty shop.

Quirky finds and classics—from Monty Python to Tom Paxton to Flanders & Swann—get the close harmony treatment.Mostly they perform a cappella but they mix things up with a bit of guitar sometimes, with the odd soulful ballad or voxed-up pop song.Impotence, vegetarians, religion, no topic is sacred, but everything's handled with our own sardinic humour (sorry!).

They harmonise in pop, gospel, blues and barbershop styles. The Ballpoint Penguins are the ideal entertainers for festivals and events—they are fun but ubber classy. On stage or roving from table to table, they add an elegant but light-hearted air to your function.Since forming in mid-2003, The Penguins have performed at Fremantle Festival, Fairbridge Festival, the Nannup Music Festival, Spring in the Valley, Darlington Arts Festival, and other festivals, wineries, clubs and private functions.

78s to watch the allergic reaction subside by --

Starting off in 1935 with the all time best Valentine's Day song ever recorded by anyone, Fats Waller and his Rhythm and "The Curse Of An Aching Heart." "Nux Vomica!!"

Next, onward to 1936, with Teddy Wilson and his Orchestra, and an inimitable Billie Holiday vocal on "I Can't Give You Anything But Love." Right now, I'd rather have a bottle of calamine lotion.

Belle Mann (dubbing for Alice White) -- I've Got My Eye On You (1930)

This clip from the movie Showgirl In Hollywood also provides a fascinating look at how the early talkies were made. Note the wooden booths to muffle the racket made by the cameras. The Vitaphone recording equipment can also be seen.

Very little known is known about Belle Mann -- not even a picture of her is known to exist. What is known is that she was primarily a studio vocalist who also played the banjo. Among her recordings are a couple of sides with Ben Pollack and his Park Central Orchestra on the Victor label.

Has your video been "yanked"?

If so, a pity. I've been looking for a copy of "Showgirl in Hollywood for years, now.
