This is a very special nostalgia piece for me. The NBC News space coverage of the Apollo missions which I eagerly followed as a little guy was sponsored by Gulf Oil and I remember this commercial well from those historic TV broadcasts. In fact I practically knew this song by heart. At that time I couldn't decide whether I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up or "a workin' on a tank ship" lol

That's actually The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem, if you want to get technical about it, though Makem would leave the group that year. The tune is from an old traditional called "The Gallant Forty-Twa" that they first recorded on 1964's "The First Hurrah!". Liam Clancy sang the tune on the record, but that's Tommy Makem on the commercial spot. Thanks for posting. I've never seen that before.
