A new and instant favourite! A song I just discovered at yesterday's CA Pops Orchestra concert. Its "Being Alive" by Stephen Sondheim. Here's the lyrics:

Wow, hadn't heard that one in a while. I loved Glen Campbell growing up. When learning guitar, songs like Gentle on My Mind, Wichata Lineman, etc. were easy and popular. As I got older, I went for more edgy like Willie, Waylon and Merle, or more vintage like Conway and the "Possum". He has a nice voice, just a little too light for me...

Nothing against Glenn, but I dig the man that wrote it. Allen Toussaint is a living treasure.

Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles, the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club album:

For some reason, this is my favorite Beatles song. It's got catchy lyrics, a good melody, and a hauntingly suspenseful orchestra during two phases of it.

Anybody able to explain the ending though? I mean the part that starts at around 5:10 in the video. "Never could be any other way," what? Creepy sounding the first few times. I remember listening to it late at night on my iPod, and it startled me pretty badly.

The ending was the repeat groove on the original vinyl. It's what your needle would skip on at the end of the record so it wouldn't damage itself. It was originally intended as a bit of a joke. It was recreated for the cd/mp3.

The original “Evil Ways” recording (from Bobo Motion), by Willie Bobo. I had the great honor of sharing the bandstand with Willie’s right hand man, Victor Patoja. I was in the last band that he played with before he passed away last year.

Man did Victor play with a lot of musicians. His first gig was with Harry James. He also played with Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughn, Sammy Davis, Cal Tjader, Santana, the Grateful Dead, ….the list is endless. The world misses you Victor.
