Now playing, it's 1929 with Annette Hanshaw and a tune from the Fox Movietone Follies of 1929, "Big City Blues." Maybe so, but at least they have crews to unplug the storm drains.

Next, ahead to 1933 with Richard Himber and his Essex House Orchestra and Joey Nash going on and on about "Winter Wonderland." Yeah, sure, and a few weeks later it's all grey and brown with old bottles and cans and shopping carts sticking out of it.

More Al Bowlly today. I love this video, because he actually talks in it and kind of moves around a bit. He was really good looking as well as a great singer.

Side B, Rapsody on a Paganini's theme.

One of the very best recordings of these pieces.

excellent selection Martin. :eusa_clap

Regarding Artie Shaw's Gloomy Sunday; check his eleven-bar
clarinet solo in These Foolish Things? Shaw thought it his best.

Just as wise as her brother and as good as her mother...

Whispering Jack Smith -- She's A New Kind Of Old-Fashioned Girl (1929)

Dressed in flapper clothes, flashing silken hose
You may think her a trifle too gay
And those who criticize her mascaraed eyes
Are too hard on the girl of today

She's a new kind of old-fashioned girl
Likes to play around, cabaret around
She's as true as the old-fashioned girl
Underneath the paint you will find a saint

She may dance till the break of the dawn
But her little fling doesn't mean a thing
Just as wise as her brother and as a good as her mother
She's just a new kind of old-fashioned girl
