Stratoliner

Most of the hats were made in a 2 1/2" brim which was the righr size for the 1940's . I've seen a 2 3/4" inch brim but never bigger .

Sharpe's is the biggest?

Sharpe's is the biggest dimensions I have come across on ANY strat. 3" Brim and 5-1/2 open crown. When bashed, crown height is dependent upon the "basher", but 5-1/2 is the crown height on EVERY strat I have ever bought and sold, and that was always open crown.

A short brim

I have a very light grey Stratoliner with a 2 1/4" brim, which I think is unusally narrow. The liner makes me think it is not a 60s hat. I have a light blue Strat with a typical 60s Stetson liner: "STETSON" in blue block caps with gold trim, above it the coat of arms in red, blue and gold, all surrounded ty a three line round gold border). The grey Strat has the words "Royal Stetson" in an elaborate face, R and S caps, the rest lower case, blue outlined in gold, with the coat of arms (smaller) in the three colors and a series of script lines with loops on the end starting above the coat and ending beneath the name. That liner I thought was older, and I think appears post war through the 50s. If that's right, it means Stetson tried a narrower brim pretty early (the felt quality suggests that as well). And maybe they kept it up; I have a brown Strat with the 60s liner (though it looks like a rehab).

I checked it several times. The hat is NOS and has never been blocked.

Art fawcett said it was one of the nicest hats he has ever seen...

Well then I will have to get my butt in gear and build a box for it! lol

By the way all...even if no one else likes this design....I am VERY happy with it. This week is crazy hectic for me as I have out of town gigs....but I am itching to cut some leather for them. The Design is complete and I started cutting patterns today. I bid on and missed a 1930's leather sewing machine today that would ahve sped up things while maintaining the traditional styling...oh well...[huh] its hand stitching for now.

thanks for asking. :)

Actually due to life and its variencies...I have not. I am currently getting a hexagonal one finished for Art. Plus the Strat box design...though very nice, is still not settled in my mind. Its close though. If I start on it after Arts box...it only needs another 50 hours or so of work. Why? Are ya interested?

Of course I'm interested! I wouldn't have asked if I wasn't. I just found a Stratoliner and I'm in negotiations for an original box at the moment from a local source. I was poking around for a fair market value and stumbled accross this post.

Ahh...wonderful. Those origional Strat boxes were cool and tried to reflect the nose shape of the plane (to degree). I am taking mine a different direction. A bit art deco.

I will start on it after Art's box and pop you a picture when its done. Still all hand working everything, so its a bit of process.

Sorry to bump

I know had a Stratoliner when I was 10 or so...a very light fawn/tan one. I remember the thin band and matching finish around the brim. I think my dad found it at a sale somewhere and gave it to me. I wore it for at least one summer as a fishing hat then...you'll hate me...for reasons I cannot now fathom I spraypainted it black, then pitched it. Please don't ban me. :eusa_doh:

I really like the look of these (esp. that brown on on the E-place right now) and am thinking about having my wife go to the craft store for a similar thin ribbon for my Jaxon Bogart when it arrives this week. Going by the pics I can find the ribbon on these looks about 1/2 or 3/4", is that about right? Thx

EDIT: This being my first real hat, are the ribbons tacked on with a stitch here and there, or all the way around top and bottom? If it's the latter I'm probably outta luck.

Welcome, and I call the ribbon a 3\8's.

It's the former so you may be able to make the switch. Welcome!!

Thank you both for the help! And for the welcome.

Gene, I have been wanting to ask since I first visited the other day: what hat is that in your avatar? That is EXACTLY what I imagined I'd want before I started shopping around - shape, color, everything. In fact, it's almost the exact shade I'd like the Jaxon to end up (a bit lighter, maybe), if I decide to risk dyeing it.
