Sunbody straw from Nathaniels hatshop. Had him custom shape and fit it for me.

I did not. I carefully cut about a 6" section taking care not to disturb the stiches, plus there was just enough stiffener to hold the threads. I accessed the wire from there, cut it and was able to pull it out. I then used a small amount of wood glue to close the welt.
I did an "accidental" wire job on my Artel. I couldn't get the brim right, so I put it on a flange to shape the brim. This caused the wire to snap and protrude between the weave. I finished shaping it, then cut off the protruding 1" of wire and stuffed the end back into the weave. The wire is still in there but not connected at the back, the ends do meet though. It all worked out fine.

This is the other of my Wrangler by Miller Bros. straws. 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 really tapered crown and not as fine a weave as my other. I think I figured this one at near 450 wpsi. I've stained this one up a good bit this summer. Straw may not be as heavy as felt but these tight weave panama's breath like me in an iron lung with a pack of Marlboro Reds every 4 hours. I sweat.

Thanks, Dd much appreciated. The crease was kind of scary but it was so tapered I had to try something. Getting it damp enough to mold the straw w/o breaking it and not so wet that it collapsed was the hard part. Reworked the brim yesterday to get some of the Kenny Chesney out of it.
