Amazing...great job.Picked up a couple of these things awhile back. Both Wrangler by Miller Bros. Montecristi woven western panama's. This is the nicer of the two though originally sold for $120 as opposed to $175 for the lesser model. I'd put this hat at late 70's-mid 80's. 4' brim by an almost 7', very tapered open crown. Both hats came with a wired brim and cattleman crease.
I opened the crown and removed the brim wire. Ironed it flat and applied a couple coats of lacquer. Shaped the crown to my liking, reducing the taper and still getting a lot of clearance. Rolled the brim edge by hand and left the brim relatively flat.

I think Randy Meisner still owns a ranch (by sections, not acres) somewhere between Scottsbluff & going north towards Crawford. If they can reestablish the native grasses I think the cowmen will be happy with that. It sure would be nice to see the accomplished.
Pretty country out there in Idaho.
Here's a couple photos off the internet of the Sandhills. And they are sand. Just like sand in a kid's sandbox. My father in law worked on ranches out there for 40-50 years. During the 30's he said it looked like the Sahara. The rains stopped and the grasses suffered, but they came back.
No. I thought I was in a different thread when I posted it.Is this a straw hat?

Did you resew the welt after removing the wire?Picked up a couple of these things awhile back. Both Wrangler by Miller Bros. Montecristi woven western panama's. I believe you are right about RM. I love the Ft Robinson area. Many people think Nebraska is just flat cornfields but if they get off I-80 they can see some pretty country.I think Randy Meisner still owns a ranch (by sections, not acres) somewhere between Scottsbluff & going north towards Crawford.
Beautiful country, I've been to Ft. Robinson & whats left of the Red Cloud Agency a couple of times, seen the buttes, & heard the elk bugle around Crawford.

Ted Turner is the largest rancher in the state. RM may be #2.I believe you are right about RM. I love the Ft Robinson area. Many people think Nebraska is just flat cornfields but if they get off I-80 they can see some pretty country.
Interesting. I could see that it was still there. Is the welt still functioning as added strength, or do you think the lacquer does that?l
I did not. I carefully cut about a 6" section taking care not to disturb the stiches, plus there was just enough stiffener to hold the threads. I accessed the wire from there, cut it and was able to pull it out. I then used a small amount of wood glue to close the welt.
I know RM owns land I guess i don't know how much, but ole Ted is trying to buy up all the Sandhills I think. Last I heard he had about half million acres. Might be more. There are a lot of mixed emotions out there about what Ted is doing. He has bison on much of his land and all of his purchases have put quite a few ranch families out of the area. Everyone is pretty interested about what is going to happen with the land when he dies.Ted Turner is the largest rancher in the state. RM may be #2.
Bout time for some western boots isn’t it??This Grady's has quickly become a summer favorite:
